re: Christians: “The only thing more powerful than hate is love“
Posted by yadaddy on 2/9/26 at 9:33 am to CatahoulaCur
not mad at the message if you take it at face value. I think the issue is that when the masses push this idea of "love" they're often conflating it with tolerance which is inherently opposed to love. Tolerating unrighteousness is the opposite of love: apathy. Love would be refusing to turn your back on the current state while still demanding improvement.
On the other hand, I don't believe hate is actually all that powerful. Love, regardless of the kind (unconditional, friendship, familial, and romantic) are all leaps and bounds more powerful than hatred. I'd argue that fear is a much more dangerous state than hatred.

picking the exact outcomes of each series is more in depth than I'm willing to go but I don't hate the conference record prediction. I think we're somewhere between 16-19 conference wins. Hearing lots of 20+ win predictions and I just feel like that's an insane expectation considering neither of the 23 or 25 teams could break 20 conference wins.
So many really incredible songs here. Life Sentence and What If are a couple of my favorites

quote:
He's entirely just in his judgement of us but imagine how it must feel to create someone you love dearly, knowing full well what the eternal destination of those apart from Christ looks, sounds and feels like. Then imagine paying that penalty for that person you love and making a way for them to avoid all of that misery and they look back at you and say, "no thanks."
I think John 6: 37-40 addresses this beautifully.
quote:
37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
He says clearly that ALL whom the Father has given Him will come to Him. Jesus will never push those away. He then claims that it's the will of the Father that Jesus wouldn't lose ANY of these that have been drawn to Him. If that was the Father's will and the reason Jesus came, is it true meaning Jesus completed the task ie: "it is finished," or did Jesus fail to fulfill the will of the Father?
This isn't an argument for universalism at all by the way, it's the basis for God's sovereignty in salvation.

So I have to think instead that, in his heart of hearts, at a level of calm conviction so deeply hidden beneath veils of childhood indoctrination that he is all but unaware of its existence, he keeps and treasures the certainty that in the end—in the words of Dame Julian of Norwich (1342–1416)—“All shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.”
quote:
Put in short, if Jesus tells us that he is the way, the truth and the life but people will be saved apart from him, is Jesus lying, misinformed or incompetent?
Agreed on the second quote, as it's in accordance with Christ's words in John 14:6: I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
To expand on the first quote about the subject not desperately evangelizing the entire world, I'd assume he views his responsibility as his family and close community. We ARE called to make disciples of all nations but there's a distinction between disciples and believers. Paul wrote to Christian churches around the world to transform them from mere believers to disciples - disciplined followers of Christ. My heart is to tell everyone I know about Christ and to bring the gospel to them, but ultimately, Christ says in John 6:44: No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day.
Even the desire to know, love, be known, and be loved by God is His Grace in action and I have no authority or power to offer that grace to anyone, as this level of grace is from God. All I can do is speak His word and it will land effectively to any in which He's drawn to Christ.
I believe this comes from 1 Corinthians where Paul says to stay unmarried in order to offer undivided focus onto the Lord. Although he did say it's better to marry if one lacks self control. He taught that both singleness and marriage were gifts offering different challenges.
I don't know for sure why a vow of celibacy is required, thus preventing marriage, but I do think that's generally where it comes from.

I believe they backed off, maybe in Vatican II, to state that she would simply not have been in full communion previously.
Maybe that's true, and I'll admit ignorance to that if so. However: "CANON VI.–If any one saith, that the canon of the mass contains errors, and is therefore to be abrogated; let him be anathema." so the council that edited or backed off of the claim at Trent, would also be anathema according to Trent.
And again, I'm not attacking anyone's personal beliefs here. Just looking at the available texts and applying it to the situation being discussed.
quote:
if I convinced you some how that I didn't think she was saved or even that I knew whether or not she was saved it was not my intent.
I don't doubt your intent here at all. Also this reply is not concerning your personal beliefs.
However, the Catholic Church is very clear on these situations. "The Mass: Anyone who states that the Mass is only a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, or that it is a mere commemoration of Christ's sacrifice on the cross rather than a propitiatory (atoning) sacrifice, is anathema." This is from Trent. 22nd Session, Canon III, which is considered infallible dogma within the Church. Again, not speaking about Catholics on an individual level, but this is the view of the church as it's said plainly.
I don't know anything about her beliefs other than she attends a non denominational church, but he submits to a Church that declares her cut off from Christ and she does not submit to that. Regardless of who's right or wrong, I think it's fair to assume that if she were to convert to Catholicism (especially a Catholicism that is not declared anathema by Trent) she would have to at some point believe that she was previously not saved.
quote:
It's hard for me to not be argumentative with people who reject the Catholic Church, but I'm learning to pray for God to defend his Church because I am not skilled enough to do so with the kindness of Jesus.
As a protestant, this is the way. Without taking anything away from missionaries and ministers, it's okay to trust that God will defend His Church. We may disagree about what that means, but if we're both genuine in our pursuit of Christ, we should have faith that His will is going to prevail. Far too much contentious argument and not enough truth seeking dialogue happening within religious groups who make a claim to Christianity in one way or another. I can really appreciate your perspective on this

Fundamental misunderstanding of the reformation. Moreover, Trent anathematized not only protestants and everyone who believes a different soteriology than Catholicism, but also a large majority of nominal Catholics who sit in those pews. I grew up Catholic and have zero ill will towards Catholic people but man... attacking the faith of the person who you asked to marry you without having an understanding of its history seems... interesting.
I genuinely wish you luck and blessings over your potential marriage, but I'd at least have some serious conversations about yalls theological differences and what salvation means. For your marriage's sake, I don't care if you agree or disagree with me, but you ought to be unified on that with your spouse.

Though he wasn't mentioned, Brad Pitt's final stand from the tank in Fury was heavily inspired by Audie Murphy. The guy led his unit and held his ground from the top of a tank and fended off 6 Panzers and roughly 50 german soldiers if I remember correctly. Also, David Morrel said Rambo's character in First Blood was loosely based off of Audie Murphy, although the basis was mostly around his PTSD.
Point is, his name isn't often mentioned in movies but his influence is definitely there.
Edit: edited the number of soldiers he fended off from the tank

I've read up on Roy Benavidez a good bit. Pretty incredible story. I've seen a lot about Mike Vining but have never done a true deep dive. May learn up on him next.
Military guys... who's your favorite service member past or present?
Posted by yadaddy on 1/27/26 at 9:05 am
I've never served and I have the utmost respect for the guys that have. Done a lot of reading on guys like Audie Murphy, Dan Daly, Richard Bong, John Paul Jones, etc.
I'm genuinely fascinated at the bravery and resolve that these men in history displayed, but rather than just searching for articles about the best service members I figured I'd see if any vets had any guys that stood out or inspired them at some point in time.
Obviously, I'd hope there would be deep respect for anyone who served our country, but if you could only tell the story of one service member to the next generation, who would it be?

ESPN says we landed Princewell

Way too early top 25
ESPN released their “Way Too Early Top 25” and has us at 15 but mentioned that we landed Princewell in the body text. Apologies if I missed the announcement but I didn’t see that as official anywhere else but this article.

Lubbock and Nashville

I'll make no positive claims here and like everyone else here, I hope it's Lane but truly have no clue.
Looking at flight logs in and out of BTR and everything seems relatively normal except for one flight flying to BTR from Lubbock currently. After looking into it, that same plane flew round trip to Nashville yesterday, and is scheduled to do so again this afternoon. Plane owned by MMR.
That could mean literally nothing, but it begs the question if Joey Maguire and Clark Lea are being vetted. Neither of which were high on the assumed list, so I'm not making any assumptions... more so asking if anyone has any insight or if this is a complete nothing burger.

It doesn't matter when comparing 2 teams with BCR's above 50%... it is a massive tell for teams who can't win a title though. Since that metric started being recorded, there's not a single national champion who had a BCR of less than 50%
Most recently, Washington and TCU were below 50% when they went to the Championship and we saw how those worked out. When it comes to playing your last game for all that marbles you need a star studded roster and 4 stars who can fill in for injuries or fatigue.
I will say this though... We have a better BCR currently than these teams did when they won a title: Michigan (23), LSU (2019), Clemson (2018), Clemson (2016), Ohio State (2014), Florida State (2013), Bama (2012), Bama (2011)

I hear where you're coming from but it's not true. Defensive movement pre-snap is the same as offensive motion. The whole point of DL movement is to make the QB make gap reads, communicate with his center, and then change it so they have to adjust, or snap the ball anyway if the play-clock is low. Different stunts and assignments are run out of different gap techniques and the movement disguises it. Same as a safety creeping down into the box after coming out in a 2-high set or otherwise.
Also, neutral zone infractions already exist. It's the offense's job not to start before the ball is snapped. The defense, at every other position but DL apparently, can move freely pre-snap so long as they don't cross the line of scrimmage.

What learning material would you recommend to a once catholic, now protestant, person? I have no interest in arguing or putting down other belief systems... the goal is just to be aligned with scripture, and if you believe you've found that in Catholicism, I'd love to do that same learning. Trent is tough for me though, I'll be honest.

out of curiosity, do you find that the faith has truly remained in the family, or is it the tradition of following a certain denomination that has become a staple? And I ask that respectfully... same could be asked about any denomination to anyone whose family has a generational belief system. I'm not implying that this is a bad thing either, so I hope the question isn't received in way that's unintended.

Similar story here. Baptized and confirmed into Roman Catholicism but as I got into my 20s my beliefs looked much more like a reformed baptist or PCA presbyterian. Was certainly a point of contention at first but much less now.
