Two years ago we went to Estes Park and this year we went to Taos. We go in the fall of the year
We look for moderate (at worst) trails that are around 4-5 miles long. We aren’t trying to scale Everest so we are only looking for modest elevation gain. However, we like mountains, lakes and vista.
We like to stay in smaller towns and we enjoy going to restaurants and taking in any cultural sites.
So, the two biggest criteria are good hiking trails and a “cool” small town.
Also, we prefer to rent a house/cottage that sleeps our group

Grayson Highlands on the Appalachian Trail near Damascus Virginia. Also bike the Virginia Creeper trail while there. You are also fairly close to Boone/Blowing Rock so there are shore trails around the Blue Ridge Parkway, Grandfather Mountain, and Linville.

Telluride is a great place to hike. Silver lake is great, the Blue lakes trail is as well. Cornet falls...Bear Creek in Ophir.
Just have to time it right with all the festivals and stuff. Most of the festivals, like the Mushroom fest of the Hand Gliding fest, don’t really impact travel, but the Bluegrass fest and the film fest may gum things up.
Rent a Jeep and do Imogene pass on a rest day.

Sedona, AZ
My favorites, in order of preference:
1) West Fork Trail, 7 miles straight in and back down Oak Creek Canyon. This is a great one during the summer because it crosses the creek and is shaded pretty much the entire length.
2) Soldier Pass, 4 miles straight in and back. There are some cool pools and the Devil's Sinkhole to see.
3) Devil's Bridge Trail, 4 miles straight in and back. Takes you out to a natural sandstone arch.
4) Boynton Canyon Trail, 6 miles straight in and back. First half is full sun. On the way back there is a resort to stop and drink/eat. Back half is shaded. There is also a short trail that shoots off this one that leads to some nice views.
They're all "out-and-back" trails, so you can make the hike as long or short as you wish. None of these have much elevation gains. You might gain 500' at the most. All are well traveled, well marked and well known. There are some good places nearby to camp if that's your thing. If not, there are plenty of accommodations in Sedona to suit your taste. I can go on and on about the great hikes in AZ, but I've never gotten a complaint about anything in Sedona. The entire area is just beautiful.

Look into Big Bear National Park. There aren't really any towns nearby, but it's a great place to set up a base camp and explore a huge area. I believe there are shelters to rent. Just plan to bring in all the food you plan to eat, as stores are not close by.
The hiking is great, and there are some really cool spots to explore in the park. There is an 8,000 ft peak that's not too strenuous to tackle, as well as a natural hot spring and the Rio Grande to jump in.

From something I wrote a few years ago
Crazy Horse met us at the door to the hostel.
He didn't work for the hostel, he certainly wasn't getting paid for anything, but he took it upon himself to be the chief greeter, and to ensure everyone got the low down on town.
Looking at our Jeep, he jerked his head and said bring everything inside. The meth heads will break your window, and they'll take everything.
We had dinner later at the Mexican restaurant in town. They were out of everything but beer and burritos. Both were excellent.

I was going to recommend Big Bend as well, until I realized he said they go in the Fall. That's a tough area if the heat is on when you get there.
