What do your friends and family members think of your travel lifestyle?

Not everyone wants to or has the means to journey all over.

Lots of coworkers seem jealous and make the “must be nice” comments.
Family seems positive when I mention upcoming travel plans. Mom always seems scared like I’m gonna go broke from traveling.. which I might.

“Enjoy all that travel now! Not going to be able to do that if you have kids!”
….yeah, no shite Nancy from Accounting, why do you think I’m traveling?

My friends and family make comments that suggest they think we spend too much on travel. They buy new cars too much. I spend my money making memories and don’t think twice about it. My kids will only have a short percentage of their life under my roof. I want to have a lot of memories of this time and what better way than to travel places with them.

They refer to us as poor and boring, but they're kidless and living their best life.

Most will give me underhanded comments about how much we spend on the accommodations. Sure I can spend 33% less and stay in a condo on the beach with thousands of other people. Or I can spend the extra money and have a private beach.
Did a group trip to Gattlenburg a few years ago. They found the cheapest cabin and bitched about the extra drive time, limited amenities, etc. we figured out what we’d be doing each night and found a cabin central to everything to limit night driving. Almost paid double, but worth it to have the nice amenities and not worry about the extra drive time

Interesting question!
I think we sometimes just assume we're going here or there and it's not viewed differently by others. In our case, we've met our family obligations, and then some, so our goal is at least one European Trip per year and some type of significant domestic trip. Keep that cadence until we can't. But I'm sensitive to how that would come across. For some, with kids or less means, a trip to Europe might be a "trip of a lifetime" and here we are going 1-2 times of year. I could see how that'd look.
Co-workers. Generally happy for me, but I try not to throw it out there to obviously what I've done. But, in the last few trips, they've directly asked to "see some pictures", so I've tried to put a series together of selected pictures and just take a few minutes to go through them. Not blathering on and on about our "great trip". I will hear the "maybe one day I'll get to.." comments occasionally from younger people tethered with kids and jobs etc. But not too much.
Family. Since our kids have been taken on some of these great journeys, not really much other than an occasional "you're spending all that money.." comments.
We've worked hard budgeted for it and are going to travel until we can't!

I don’t really discuss with co-workers except the one or two others that like to travel.
Family-wise, it’s funny because my wife and I love to travel and prioritize it. Neither of our families like to travel. They don’t ridicule us, they just don’t get it. We get a lot of “that’s cool.” They take the same vacation each year to the beach or a cruise ship or camp. I mean, I like a camp, but you’ve seen Toledo Bend a dozen times, go to a camp on a river in Colorado or Montana or Iceland! Go to a beach in Portugal instead of PCB.

I have a lot of friends who travel a lot. I also have a lot of friends and coworkers who do the same beach trip each year or have a lake house or beach house (Galveston). Nobody cares because we all think it's only our own business.
My family is good with it because they travel as well. My dad and mother in law have been to all the continents except Antarctica and all 50 states. My mom, who is 81, even traveled as a child from small town Louisiana to Chicago and California. I'd been to a dozen National Parks by age 10 in the 60s. Travel is a way of life for my family.

We average about 3 trips a year (working around my kids school schedule). I’ve had a few people mention that we travel “all the time” but never question us on it. It’s important to me as a parent to expose my kid to different places & people so we make the necessary sacrifices to be able to do that. I’m not wealthy by any means but we make it work. We often take trips with family & friends to help offset the cost. Our vacation this summer was our first one alone.

I think they are less concerned about the locations and more concerned about the orgies I travel to

Good question. We get a few comments here and there about spending too much money, but nothing too bad. Those are usually the same people that drop 10k on a week to gulf shores - when we spend much less than that for 3 weeks international.
I think people get intimidated by international travel or think it’s too expensive. It usually only takes one trip to change their opinion forever.

My son visited 14 states before he was 2. I always laughed when people said that to us before we had him.

I have no clue, I don't recall them ever really making comments about it. They'll ask about our trips when we get back, but haven't heard anything negatively or positively about our travel habits.

My family thinks I’m crazy. My dad is 64 and probably won’t ever leave Louisiana again. Half his family is just like that. They may take on 5 day trip to Orange Beach, but that’s about it.
I get the “must be nice” a lot. And a lot of “I guess that’s why my insurance is going up” (own an insurance agency).
But, most of them have been working in chem plants since they were 18 and have been making $100k+ for years with great retirement and benefits, so they could easily travel as much as me, but they just chose not to.

we found a place (Colorado) and a time (jun/jul) that suits us and we go every year. My suggestion is that most people would be happier on vacation if they did similar
find a place that works for you that you can afford and go have fun

I feel like half my wife's family has never been on a plane. A lot of them are very rural and the thought of leaving Louisiana or getting a plane is frightening as hell.

Everyone travels now. shite, half the people I know travel 3-6 months a year.
