What kind of advice are you looking for?
I will be there in about 10 days.

For about $25 a day you can get a hop on hop off water/bus pass and visit all the surrounding islands. Once you figure out the system it is quick efficient and cheap. Take note, these boats move pretty quick at stops have your shite ready to go and get on and off quickly

Throw out the paper map if you get one. Locate your destination on Google or Apple maps but don't try to follow it. Download a compass on your phone, and when you the map says turn right go east, turn left go west, etc... You'll be driven crazy trying to find the "street" name sign because it will be a an old ceramic tile plaque about 25' up on the corner of an old building. And the street you've been looking for...that's the 30-inch wide alley that goes about 3 buildings deep. The fun is all in the confusion and what you'll discover next!

Rons if great wine bars serving cichetti in the northwest quadrant which is the old Jewish ghetto. Also bar All’Arco, Cantina di Moro, and Al Merca. Gelateria Nico.
Love Venice. But get out of St. Marks, which is beautiful but don’t spend money around there.

That area is really expensive

I haven’t been there in 15 years, but the best advice is to get off of the main tourist routes. Get lost. Explore neighborhoods where locals live and work. A lady and I were out taking photos and ended up in a small piazza with nothing but locals: people shopping, walking dogs, kids playing, etc. it was absolutely charming. There was a little trattoria where we had a glass or two of wine and some pasta and people watched. It was my best night in Venice.
TL;dr: Get off the beaten path. It’s an island. You can’t get that lost.

Hotel Le Isole, small and convenient. We've had good luck with AB&B as well,
Studio Tony Green - Tony Green.net
NOLA-Venice artist and enjoyable guy. Buy a small oil painting.
2908 Cannaregio, Venice, Italy, 30121
Venice Day Trips - LINK
Contact online and book walking food/drink in Venice or book a vineyard trip on the mainland by van. I highly recommend. Do this early to learn the best food scene.
Try to eat at smaller restaurants. Order house wines. The restaurants buy in bulk from regional wineries and take pride in what they offer.
Like So La. some bad seafood gets served. Ask locally for most reputable oyster/claim/crab places.
Find a plaza you like and drink spritz. The locals like them made with Select, a Venetian cordial similar to Campari.
Vaporati water bus to Lido (beach) and Torcello (Byzantine church on marsh island). Murano - glass museum and glass studio's. Avoid most small glass from China.
When you encounter people off a ship, go another way.
St Mark's cathedral is very strict about backpacks. Check at nearby check room before getting in line. Many small museums to pick from. Fortune is nice.
Have a grand time.

Don’t go! The Italians can’t run shite right. All of the “quaint” sidewalk restaurants have the same menus and stacks of cold bland sandwiches that are either dry as a week old donut or slathered in funky condiments. It’s like a city-wide chain restaurant with different names for each location.
If you’re lucky, you might find a good slice of pizza.
Bathrooms are scarce and when you find one, it makes the old Fleur de Lis in Baton Rouge seem like a day spa.
Souvenir shops run by Palestinian refugees.
I could go on, but I hope you get the message.

I think that everyone recognizes that one doesn't primarily go to Venice for the food. It's definitely not a place to find good pizza. Seafood is the best bet.

Seafood is the same at every “unique” restaurant. Bread is tasteless.

I am there right now.
Today was our first day The weather is beautiful.
Venice is a madhouse of tourists in the daytime but it is magical at night after the tour groups cruise shippers leave. (I forget that a cruise ship brought me here)
We just had a delicious seafood dinner at Al Covo. Make reservations in advance. The owners are very friendly. The husband is a native Venetian and the wife is from Texas.
Hotel Ai Cavalieri is exceptional.

There is a shopping mall on the north east corner of the Rialto Bridge that has a roof top viewing area...no charge. About 5 stories up so great views of the Grand Canal.
One of our favorite meals in Italy was dinner at Osteria La Zucca. Refreshingly not overly "Italian".
You'll see squid ink pasta on all the menus. Had it at a seafood restaurant that was highly recommended on Yelp. It was nothing special.
Don't eat while walking around...our first day we grabbed a slice at a small storefront. We were trying to get to a church or something before tours stopped so started on our way. Got a serious snarl from an older gentleman. (Might actually be a ticketable offense).
It was also our 4th Italian city in 2 weeks so when we saw an Irish Pub we decided to step in for a beer. Nachos on the menu...so we thought why not for an afternoon snack. "Why not" was a plate of potato chips with ketchup on them. So the moral is don't get nachos in an Irish Pub in Venice Italy.

I think that rooftop viewing area you mentioned is no longer available. I have been there before and have considered that one of the best free viewing areas in Venice. I went back today and it was another store and the rooftop was not available. Unless I went to the wrong place.
