re: "oracle of wall street" with another great idea. Home equity loans for vacation
Posted by Uroblast on 5/7/24 at 7:19 am
Not the only crazy person advocating stuff like this. FHFA currently has proposed rule change now under comment to allow Freddie and Fannie to get into the second mortgage game. So now you the taxpayer can back someone consolidating high interest (ie high risk) consumer loans into a second mortg...
re: United Methodist Church votes to allow gay marriage and gay clergy
Posted by Uroblast on 5/2/24 at 5:15 pm
Our church is fairly conservative but not quick to make sudden moves. Most wanted to stay until there was an actual BOD change thinking that there were be extended time to leave. We hoped that it would not happen. Boy were we wrong to be so trusting. The other change that is just as big is the r...

Just read article that the provision allowing exit with this method has now been rescinded effective 5/4/24. I guess tolerance and acceptance is a one way street. I don’t want to sound bitter as I’m sad over the decision at conference. But this is BS as generous terms had been offered to those ...
re: Students walk out of Utah middle school to protest ‘furries’
Posted by Uroblast on 4/18/24 at 12:14 pm
Had an interesting argument with my oldest who said that out of respect for others, I should address them with preferred pronouns and use their preferred inclusive language (which doesn’t sound like grammatically correct English to me). My counter was that we should do the same for furries and comm...
re: 60 minutes is about run a hit piece
Posted by Uroblast on 3/31/24 at 9:48 pm
I found the 60 minutes piece to be quite informative and disturbing. I did not feel that it was a piece designed to promote involvement in Ukraine. It was quite critical of US administration. I did think it pointed out that the US operates in a dangerous world - more dangerous than some of our ...

Check out Rock Island State Park on the south end of lake. It’s a good day hiking all around with lots of waterfalls. You can walk the rocky river bed when the dam is not generating power. Eat at the Rock Island Market at the park entrance ...
re: International Flight Layover question
Posted by Uroblast on 2/6/24 at 6:32 am
I’ve got a connection (ATL-CDG-Dubrovnik) there this summer and had similar question. Do you have to clear customs at CDG or at terminal stop? All flights booked through Delta. I have 2.5 hours for layover. Couldn’t find a clear answer on the google machine. Thanks for the advice. ...

Finally something I can get behind from Harvard.
"An Honest Diversity Statement" by James Hankins
Publication link is Law and Liberty.
Light reading for a Sunday morning.
Hope this guy's days aren't numbered.

Bump for Calliope. Just got back from a great meal after getting this rec. Really fantastic place. Might be the Arak talking though. Thanks for your post! Easy bistro has been my favorite place for years for nice night out but this might have jumped it. ...

Watch out with Singulair.
Recent NYT article about it. Have seen the effects personally.

New aluminum bass boat recs
Posted by Uroblast on 12/31/23 at 11:45 am
After 20 years of ownership of a Tracker 175 (Mercury 60 hp 2 stroke), I think I'm going to head into the new boat market. Too many upgrades in electronics, trolling motors, outboards to retool mine. Considering 18 -19ft aluminum hull bass boat. Don't want fiberglass. Dang they are all expensive....
re: Private equity ownership of hospitals made care riskier for patients, a new study finds
Posted by Uroblast on 12/31/23 at 11:34 am
Sorry for wall of text but this issue hits close and pisses me off. I’ve witnessed it first hand as well. It’s amazing that PE ownership is allowed but local physician ownership is not. It’s simply the financial industry and hospital guild keeping out competition. At least local physician owner...
re: In the Old Days We had Dirt Clod Wars.

1980-1982. Bastrop, LA. The great dirt clod war of New Space Estates between elementary/Jr High kids vs high schoolers. If you were there, you remember. Evolved from trench warfare to massive fort building from "borrowed" contruction materials. Hours dug in fending off attacks in a war of attri...

Not a whole lot to do in Marble but it is quite pretty. They just opened a new rail cart ride in Andrews which looks fun. Haven’t done yet but may this week.

re: Any cool day trips from Munich?
Posted by Uroblast on 11/14/23 at 7:02 pm
Not as much of a tourist town but I really enjoyed Kelheim. Easy trip from Munich. Home of Weissbier and couple of beer halls that serve this as a specialty. Can hike or bike along Danube River gorge (or take a boat). Visit German Liberation Hall overlooking Danube gorge. Take boat to Weltenbu...
re: Best financial gift for a baby?
Posted by Uroblast on 11/6/23 at 11:39 am
I would go in a completely different direction. A lifetime sportsman’s license at that age might have a greater ROI than most investments. Not that a gift is all about that. It’s also a lot more fun than a financial gift. ...

Amicalola Falls will be great with family. I'm not a huge fan of Helen. It can be fun but is past its prime in my opinion. I generally recommend people go to Dahlonega instead. The downtown is better than Helen and there are 2 gold panning places (Crisson Mines and Consolidated Mines) that the k...

Jumping in this thread. I’m planning to meet my daughter in Venice next summer and immediately head to both Croatia and Slovenia (no time in Venice). I’m a history junkie almost more than a natural beauty traveler. I’d love advice as we plan. Did you drive or train? Hotel recommendations plea...
re: Chattanooga Question

Hotel Indigo is in a decent part of downtown. Head south on Pine Street and there are some nice places for dinner and a drink. And if the weather is good it has a pretty good outdoor scene. Check out Easy Bistro. Old Gilman Grill is not bad. The Read House is a cool old hotel with a nice bar. ...
