My daughter (no pics) is doing a clinical rotation in Huntsville and I'm going to visit towards the end of April. She really isn't there for long (9 weeks total) so it's not like she will learn the area. We are planning on going to the US Space and Rocket Center, but it's pretty much all that's on our agenda.

Please recommend any good restaurants and bars. We'd also like to do a bit of hiking, but probably want something fairly short (3-4 miles) and fairly easy. Any recommendations for anything in Huntsville would be appreciated. Thanks, y'all!

We ate at Cotton Row for NYE and it was very professional and very good.

bars

OTBX is the local beer place and we enjoyed Green Bus Brewing. All within walking distance of each other.

This place is next on my list when we go: Valentina's Pizzeria and Wine Bar competed at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas and took home the title of "Best Traditional Pizza in the World".

Not sure about hiking, but Brown Bear Canoe rentals offers shuttle service for the Flint River.

Monte Sano State Park has some great trails to hike, and a Japanese garden on site. Buena Vista Mexican Restaurant in Owens Crossroads is great.

Greenbrier Restaurant in Madison makes my second favorite hushpuppies in the world. My uncle made my favorite but he passed on a few years ago.

100%. I thought the new one has closed for some reason. It’s been a while.

The Lost Luggage Store is not too far away and is good for a visit, you can find all kinds of electronics there. It is not quite the goldmine we thought it would be, however.

Blue plate cafe is a good home style cafe.

Also where are you flying into? BHM has some great restaurants as well.

Flying into Huntsville. Other options are too far to have my daughter (no pics) pick me up. It wasn't a pricy ticket either. Just over $300. That's the benefit of living in a big hub.

Green Mountain has a nature trail. Botanical Gardens is nice if you’re into nature.

Walk around the courthouse square at night. Plenty of restaurants with outdoor seating. A good nano-brewery is there called the Green Bus.
Mazzara’s is good Italian near downtown in an old house. Campus 805 has two microbreweries. Stovehouse has several options.

Go to Lowe Mill. It’s an arts complex that is in an old repurposed cotton processing building.

Catherdral Caverns is about 40 minutes and well worth it.

There's a bat cave (sauta cave) right off 72 where like 300,000-400,000 gray bats emerge from. Like 1/4 mile paved walk.

LINK

The Orion theater is a great place to watch a concert.

Walls of Jericho is about an hour and a great hike, but it is a little strenuous. Only like 3 miles, but it's about 1000 feet climb on the last mile walking out. Not technically difficult, just physically.

If you want Mexican made by Americans that's super American tasting, sure. Same people own steak out for Christ's sake.

Funny you should mention this. Her Clinical Instructor's kids went there during spring break.

I'm from Houston. I tend to stay away from Mexican in a lot of the south. It seldom measures up.

I totally had not heard of this cave. We very likely might do this.

Y'all have all provided a lot of ideas for me. Thanks so much.

Whoever mentioned Jack Daniels...we've done that before. She actually went to school in Nashville and will live there permanently when this rotation is done in May.

Looks like there are a lot of fun breweries and nice areas to check out. Thanks, y'all!
