Never really paid attention since they seem to happen fairly regularly but since I’m suppose to be there Saturday I’m curious if anyone has ever had to deal with them while traveling? Should I cancel that part of my trip? I’ve read they can effect public transport pretty heavily?

The French are always protesting something. I wouldn’t let it affect my trip.

The city is covered in trash because the garbage men have been on strike.

I highly doubt they are in the tourism areas and if they are you can likely easily avoid them, it’s a big city they won’t be everywhere.

I was there a few years ago when the Yellow Vest protests were going on. We were staying at the Westin by Place Vendomme. We were leaving on a Saturday morning but the concierge told us that we would have to get up at the crack of dawn to go to the airport hours early because the streets were going to be closed around the hotel.

The protests were mostly peaceful (not kidding) and they were publicized in advance so people could plan around them.

I certainly would not alter my travel plans.

I haven't been able to nail down actual locations, where is their hotel and area I should avoid?

Yeah the more I read and more forums I check it sounds like I shouldn't worry too much about it and shouldn't effect any of the tourist areas I will be in.

The protest I was referring to above was also at Place de la Concorde. That was right near our hotel which is why we had to clear out of there early before they closed the streets.

Authorities moved them south on Saturday to give that area a break. It was an absolute shite show.

I wouldn’t necessarily cancel my plans but I would expect to deal with some issues.

Don't cancel. It will be a great story to tell down the road.

I am here now with my wife and daughter. We have been here all week and have not really noticed anything as it relates to protests, other than some garbage on the sidewalks. The city actually came through 2 days ago and cleaned some of it up. It’s not a big deal. Use the “Citymapper” app to get around. It will tell you if any metros or buses are affected by protests. We’ve been all over the city with no issues. I would suggest getting an Uber from the airport to your hotel just in case the train is having issues.

The museum workers went on strike while we were there, and before we had visited the Louvre. On our last day, we heard from other tourists that management had responded by granting free admission to everyone and just letting folks in.

We raced over, but the strikers had returned to their posts, and we had to pay. Still got screwed out of seeing the Musee d Orsay.

They always have a damned strike or protest about something. Just go and be ready to deal with it.

I have been to Paris twice, and agree they are always pissed about something.

We went to Versailles about 20 years ago, and had to wait in they were deciding whether they were going to strike that day, luckily ended up not wanting to strike so we got in. Also went in 2019 during the Yellow Vest protests, wasn't at the height of them, but just made sure to avoid those areas, and it was only during the weekend.

Yeah I'm not worried about it after reading more on it.

Quick question what do ya'll do in Europe about cell service, do you get prepaid sim cards or what?

I just use my Verizon International Plan with my iPhone.

You can also provision an eSIM (unless your phone is older than an iPhone XR or similar.) Info on why you might prefer this route over just selecting an international plan from your current provider is here.

I'm going to take this route net week, I wasn't pleased with T-Mobile's provisioning of my service in Australia recently.

Lived in Paris for a few years. They are always protesting. There are usually workarounds.

A few years back, I was running late to the office, and the damn protestors knew the trains were on strike, so they then proceeded to scratch out all the barcodes, or totally destroy every scooter and rent-a-bike. Asshats.
