NYC with a teenager

We are thinking about taking our 15year old niece to New York later this year/early next year as a reward if she has good grades, assuming quarantines are relaxed.
She has grown up in the country and has never left the Gulf Coast and has expressed interest to us in travel recently and really wanting to go to NYC one day.
So we thought about taking her later this year. I have been to NY a few times, my wife several times more than me, but am interested if anyone has traveled with kids or teenagers. What are things they were interested in doing?
More specifically, restaurants to take her to that would be casual enough but fun or interesting to a 15 year old with a very limited palate but willing to branch out.
We know she would probably like things like the Statue of Liberty, the Highline, etc.

See a Broadway Show, take her into the 5th avenue stores (Tiffany etc.), ride the subway up and down Manhattan.
Serendipity III is a cool restaurant that most teen girls would enjoy. Very eclectic.

Yeah Serendipity was one I figured.
Honestly its just going to depend on what the world looks like. If NY is still mostly doing take out or outdoor seating only, and broadway and stuff like that is still shutdown, we will probably just wait.

I believe they have cancelled broadway shows for the rest of 2020.
Me and the wife have a pending trip to NYC for Christmas time that has already been rescheduled twice due to Covid, playing a wait and see approach if we still want to go. IF we have to wear masks everywhere then we don't want to go. We will be ok without the broadway shows.

She would probably enjoy Ellen’s Stardust Diner.

We did a 3-4 day trip to NYC maybe 10-12 years ago, and did all the typical first timer touristy things. Saw Wicked on Broadway, spent a good afternoon in Central Park and the area around it, hit some of the famous restaurants, Statue of Liberty, and hit the NBC Studios and did the Top of the Rock tour. Watched Jimmy Fallon's rehearsal. We didn't really plan anything ahead of time, other than getting Broadway tickets. Clearly not enough time to see much, but it was a fun anniversary trip to see the sights and eat.

No Broadway til next year....I took my limited-palate niece when she was that age; she enjoyed people watching in Times Square in the evening more than I expected. Took her to Best Bagels on W 35 to experience a NYC stand-in-line bagel breakfast, to Parisi Bakery/sandwich shop for a Little Italy experience ( LINK), and to a 'wichcraft (Tom Colicchio's small sandwich shop chain). The sleeper hit of the trip was Shake Shack (only in NYC at the time, this was years ago).
She enjoyed & still talks about the lunch we had at the Met Museum--mainly because it was such a lovely setting. A Gray's Papaya hot dog "recession special" with a fresh fruit drink, a bowl of ramen at place in Hell's kitchen filled with Japanese college students (sorry, cant recall the name), and rotis from some hole in the wall in the garment district were also consumed. She wanted to see "everything" so we didn't spend lots of time sitting at tables in restaurants--we ate well, mostly on the go.
Taking the water taxi back to Midtown from Brooklyn after walking across the bridge was an unplanned thing that ended up being fun bc the weather was gorgeous.

For a 13 year old girl, I’d suggest tea at the Plaza and/or The Blue Box Cafe (at Tiffany’s). Try some street food like a halal stand or a dollar slice. John’s of Bleeker is great pizza and the one at Times Square is actually really good.
Like someone said, definitely do a show. Could build a dinner around that.
And if she wants to get adventurous, get dim sum. You can try a lot of different stuff there. And maybe do some shopping in china town when you do that.
You can also do the Staten Island ferry. Don’t recall food but you can definitely get a beer for the trip.

There is an Au Cheval there, which has one of the best burgers I’ve ever eaten. It’s casual enough for kids, and is fantastic for adults too (good beer list, great food, etc...).
Can’t really comment on the other stuff, as I haven’t really done a ton of the touristy things that would interest a kid. When I’m New York I’m usually just partying with my friend who lives there.

I’ve been to Au Cheval in Chicago. Didn’t realize there was more than one location.
Yes my trips to NYC were all as an adult having fun, and I have done the touristy stuff as well.

I think there are only 2. Was much easier to get into than in Chicago.

Sounds like she’s trying to spice her instagram up.
But yes NyC is amazing.

Under normal circumstances, I think a 15 yr old would have a blast even just wandering the various neighborhoods of the city. The one absolute must do is WTC memorial.

Find a good restaurant in Little Italy.

Spend a day walking around Dumbo
good views of the city, the carousel, Brooklyn bridge park, galleries, little coffee pastry chocolate candy shops, Washington St,
Eat at an old school red sauce joint
Find a deli
Dim sum in Chinatown
Reservations at Misi, watch them make the pasta and enjoy a superb meal
burger joint is a neat little burger speakeasy

Take her to John's on Bleecker. Fantastic pizza and it's about half a block from an apartment where Taylor Swift lived and wrote a song about. Girls her age love getting photographed in front of that building.

I have been to John’s a few times. That was definitely a thought.
I would love to do Dim Sum. Good idea.

Personally I wouldn’t plan on any specific restaurants right now, who knows if they will still be open no matter how old they are.
If she is a teenager going to a big city especially NYC she is going to enjoy the very basic big city things: shopping, tourists sites, and public transportation as well as people seeing and trying to be seen herself.

Have you asked her?
