Newark>Statue of Liberty>9/11 Memorial

We are flying into Newark and renting a car as part of a New England trip this summer and will have a car. On our way to Connecticut that day we wanted to go see the Statue of Liberty and also maybe the 9/11 Memorial. I do not want to drive into Manhattan so is there a way to ferry to the Statue of Liberty and then on to Manhattan and back or what is the best/most efficient way to see both sites?
Thanks
Thanks

Train from Newark to Penn Station is very efficient

I believe the only way to visit SoL is to ferry from Manhattan or at least the most common way. And then you can walk to the 9/11 memorial when done.
And if you have time, visit Ellis Island. It’s part of the ferry tour and I think more interesting than the Statue

NJ train from Newark airport to PATH
Then PATH to World Trade Center. You can walk to the 9/11 memorial from the station.
As I recall the ferry to the Statue leaves from Battery Park just south of the World Trade Center.

Just take the rented car and drive into Manhattan, then leave for Connecticut from there. You're not going to save any time or convenience by not driving into the city.

100%. You will come in through the Holland Tunnel. Park in a deck and walk to both. Then take the FDR out of town. Very little driving through the streets of Manhattan. And what little bit there is you’re in the Wall Street area. It will suck probably but won’t be dangerous.
Your alternative is storing your luggage, taking public transit or cab/Uber from Newark to lower Manhattan, same back to Newark, rent your car, and retrace at least some of your steps to head north of the city.

You can (or you could in the past) get to SoL from Liberty State Park in Jersey City. That wouldn't help with access to the 9/11 Memorial though.
If you want to access the pedestal or SoL crown, you have to reserve tickets early, as slots for each are limited. Also, you are very limited on what you are allowed to take with you when climbing to the crown.

I’d drive into the city via the Holland Tunnel then park in one of the garages in the west village or even Soho then take the subway down to the WTC

Either take a train from Newark to WTC, go see 911 and then afternoon SOL or take a train down to the SOL and hit 911 on your way back to WTC station.
Or you can go to a garage in Hoboken most southern station and cross there at the exchange path station. Takes you right near the 911 memorial and then take #1 south to better park Statue of Liberty.
By the way, the Newark train will use the same path out of Hoboken. Just find a secure garage.
Randy, there’s also a ferry down by the exchange in Hoboken going across. Plan for 4 hours to do the sol/Ellis island trip. Need to book it early.

I would fly into Newark and stay the area without a car. Do what you want in the NYC area and then rent a car from the airport when you are ready to leave NCY/NJ. As you suggested, a car will be more trouble than convenience in that area. As mentioned the train in and out of NYC from Newark is very easy. I’m heading there on Saturday.

Exactly! During this whole thread I've been thinking, "What are they going to do with their luggage if they take the train and walk to the various attractions?"

So maybe I'll just drive in but what about this option...
Drive from EWR to the SoL ferry from Jersey City. Drive from there to Liberty Harbor which is less than 2 miles.
Take the ferry from Liberty Harbor to Pier 11/Wall St. and have a 15 min. walk to the 9/11 stuff.

I just don’t like driving very much below Houston

That’s another weird thing—I love the subway and look for reasons to ride it

quote:Ellis Island was way better than I was expecting. Finding the log of my grandfathers arrival to America from Italy in 1906 was a special special moment. Was also able to look at the record of him taking my dad and uncle back to the homeland on the Andrea Dora a few weeks before it sunk was eerie and cool too.

Out of the way but if you don't need need to touch the Statue of Liberty you could park in Staten Island, take the free ferry to the Battery Park, walk to 9/11, and return on the ferry. It gets pretty damn close
