I get it but you’re in Houston. Cancun is a 2 hour direct flight same time zone
Cayman is 2:50. Very scary

Cancun is probably the only nice thing about Mexico. They’ve got nice resorts all along the Yucatan. The problem is getting a passport can be a pain in the arse

La Jolla is my go to and suggestion as well. Would move there in a heartbeat!

This is probably not what you're looking for, but if I could go to any beach in the continental US it would probably be a northern Californian or Pacific Northwest beach.
If I was looking for somewhere to go with white sand and a warm climate, I would probably just go to 30A.

Best US beach I have ever been to was when we stayed at the Conrad in Ft Lauderdale and went to their beach. It was damn nice.

not trying to spend a lot on flights
I have two got spots that I love.
Hawks Cay Florida Keys
The second one I always took a day cruise to. You did not have to go and come back on the same day. The cruise was $99 when I lived there.
Grand Lucayan

I have spent weeks in Maui, Oahu and Kona. I stand by my original statement.

It's not a beach, but that area is definitely worth investigating if you want a winter vacation. We visited Tarpon Springs, Clearwater and Tampa on days not kayaking the river. Busch Gardens is also great roller coaster park if you like that.
Areas around Tampa Bay is likely too cold as well.

3. Sanibel Island (Multiple Options). Probably fly into Ft. Meyers. Maybe Tampa. Not that far drive.
Does it still exist after the hurricane?

Captiva Island or Marco Island, Florida

Depending on time of year, don't count out the barrier islands around Charleston- Sullivan's, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach. It's Atlantic coast so the sand isn't like sugar, and the water is more blue than green, but you also have Charleston dining and activities to go along with the beach experience.

I did a 2,000 mile rental car road trip with a friend out of Mexico City last summer. Both coasts, just all over the place in between. Your statement is idiotic. And I really have no desire ever to go to Cancun.

Passport is being replaced, not trying to spend a lot on flights. So not going to Hawaii, or Caribbean.
How soon are you planning on going? The reason I ask is because many people go to Hawaii and the Caribbean during non-Summer months because they have Summer weather year round. If you want to swim in the ocean and lounge on the beach then your options are a lot more limited in off-season.
Otherwise my vote goes to Anna Marie Island - cozy, laid back, sugar sand, clear water and you are right next to Tampa Bay so you can take a few days off from lounging to hit attractions, amusement parks or a ball game.
