Spirit and Frontier first. Followed by United. Then American.

Abitas got it down. Southwest, delta, Alaska are all decent but you could still have a bad flight.

Spirit
. They are not that bad if you can plan around getting charged for every little bag you bring on. I like the nonstop from MSY to Vegas.

Spirit has improved their operations such that you are as likely to arrive on time at your destination with them as you are with American. But, yes, you need to know exactly what the rules are with them, because they will nickel and dime you to death if you don't.

Since the start of the pandemic, United is the only one of the big 4 (also Southwest, Delta, and American) who has not had a major operational meltdown.

I used to put United well below Delta, and I'm not sure that I'd do that today.

Sounds like you avoid all of them.

About as reliable as you could ask from one of the big four airlines.

I don't recall ever flying United. I know I've never flown Spirit or Frontier, mainly due to their reputation. That being said, I would give those 3 a shot before ever flying American again. I can't think of one time I had a good experience with those jokers.

When I go looking for flights, it's either Southwest or Delta, but have to admit, Delta has been slipping since the pandemic.

Any of the airlines could have a major meltdown and when it happens, I'm sure that neither of them will respond well.

I fly Delta, United, or American based on where I am going. None of them are particularly bad enough to fly an extra leg just to avoid the other. So if I am going to Houston I'm flying United, even though I think Delta is the best.

I avoid all other airlines. After all the extra fees they usually don't end up being less expensive.

American sucks donkey balls. I fly a lot and they have screwed up quite a few of my itineraries in the last two years. Diversions, missed connections, cancellations...

I try only to fly them on single-leg (IE to/from Dallas) runs now as I can't trust them to make a connection and get me home.

One point I haven't seen mentioned concerning the budget airlines: You will undoubtedly be sitting next to, or near someone you would avoid in any other situation.

I fly 200k + on AA annually.

You have the big 3
American, Delta, United

Then the mid-majors
JetBlue, Alaska, Southwest, etc

Then the bad
Allegiant, Spirit, Frontier etc.

If cost and fitting into my schedule are equal I rank them:

1) Delta
2) American
3) JetBlue
4) Spirit
5) Southwest (unless checked bags are needed then #1)
6) United
7) Frontier

I've only flown Alaska once and it was a codeshare plane with Virgin that was really nice, but heard the non-codeshare planes can be dated and not as nice.

It's funny how they're usually separated into categories like that, but the experiences don't match those ranking levels. I've gotten shafted by AA (weather diversions and cancellations) and DL (IT meltdown, Easter issues) before and had great flights on Southwest and Spirit ($40 Niagara Falls to Myrtle Beach direct, ontime with no issues).

At this point, I usually recommend whatever airline is nonstop within reason. It's not worth saving $20 for 3-5 hours of extra travel with a layover anymore given how shitty the flying experience has gotten. I can see it with a ton of luggage and trying to stick with southwest but I'm past the point of extra segments/flights for status

Wrong question. Book nonstops at times that fit your needs (if your wallet allows).

It all feels the same after a while. Doesn't matter the airline, they each seem to have issues.

Alaska bought Virgin America over 3.5 years ago. No more codeshare there.

This was May 2018 so that checks out. Maybe it was one of the planes they had recently bought, not sure.

Agreed. I'd much prefer United to Delta or American. Delta has the added problem of having to fly through Atlanta. I'm not sure that I've ever had a good experience flying through Atlanta.

They ceased operations April 24th, 2018. So most likely, at the time you booked it was a codeshare until the operators certificate was merged.

Alaska aquired them back in 2016 but operated them as separate brands for a while.
