I spent 3 years at Berkeley for law school and just went back to the region this summer for a family vacation. It's a perfectly fine place to visit but I don't think you need to extend to your time there beyond your game-centric activities. I'd echo others to spend your extra time in SF, the wine country and/or along the coast.
I also second the Zachary's pizza recommendation -- it's my favorite pizza ever. If you're in Sonoma, try Della Santina's, another favorite.

what are you scared of?
My wife bitching and complaining and not wanting to go back to Central Cali because of one stupid incident. That’s what I’m afraid of. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, brother.

Nothing wrong with doing your due diligence but the mere existence of this thread reflects a huge problem in our society.
Instead of embracing a new place that may be culturally different from what we're used to, nowadays we automatically assume its a horrible place and continue the echo chamber of that groupthink.
I look forward to your post trip report, I have a feeling your mindset may change. NorCal fricking rocks

I went to Cal games for 26 years. Never had an issue, never saw a fight. Berkeley is laid back and expensive-median home price is $1.4. Berkeley is populated by intellectuals, tech nerds and hippies of all ages, and is very beautiful. The stadium is modeled after the Rose Bowl. The food scene on Telegraph Ave. gets an A. The bar scene is average. Google pics of the campus and the stadium. You’ll love it.

You live in Alabama and you’re worried that your standards will be too high for a city in California

Do not leave a single thing in the car. Not even if it can’t be seen. There are some cool spots in Berkeley but the crime is unreal.

I really like Zachary’s, but prefer little star. There is one in el Cerrito and one in alameda, with another location near lake Merritt in Oakland. Speaking of alameda, scolaris on park street is great for a burger, lived a couple blocks away from there for 10 years and it was my go to spot.
Eureka is a good place for a bite and a drink, but my favorite place around there is east bay spice for really creative drinks and good Indian food.
Hiking around berkeley is great. I remember a trail that went from the rose garden up some secret steps along the ridge and ended around the football stadium. Check all trails for the exact trail. There is also tons of great hiking anywhere around the Oakland hills.
As far as the game itself, I’ve only been to a couple Cal games. One game they were actually ranked, playing a big rival and had only about 2/3 of their puny by SEC standards stadium filled, it was pretty sad.
