Looking for trip ideas flying domestically out of Houston, he is turning 13 we have worn out the theme park vacations the past couple of years, he is interested in big cities right now he hasn’t visited many recognizable landmarks, want it to last at least 5 days can be as long as 9. We want to go mid June.. thanks in advance

I'm taking my 14 yr old to the MLB All Star Game in LA but it's in July. Going to spend a couple nights in LA and then drive to San Diego for a couple nights. Direct flight from Houston to LA.

Chicago would be my first choice followed closely by Washington D.C.

Was going to say this as well - Cubs game, Architecture boat tour (sounds like he'd love that if he's into seeing big cities), etc. I don't have enough ideas to fill 5 days there, though I'm sure others do.

Seattle would be cool and you can add in a little outdoor/mountain side trip while there

Chicago hands down.

Miami is great, too. You could drive down to the Keys.

Denver.

Boston with trips out into New England.

If he wants to see big cities, you can’t go wrong with NY, Chicago, LA. However LA will be very expensive due to lack of public transportation options - relative to the other 3 cities.

Plenty to do in Chicago for 5 days

Summer = Chicago

Cubs Game (ride the L to the game)
Steak at Gibson's
Boat Tour
Sears Tower deck
Stay somewhere on the river, IE Sheraton, Swiss, Hyatt, Trump
Brunch in Chinatown (little three happiness, beware its' filthy and amazing)
Boeing Store
Get a shoe shine at Nordstrom

Maybe take a day and ride the South Shore train out to Indiana Dune National Park and hike to the beach. There is a road that takes you ~1/2mile to the beach at Dune Park. The view of the city is pretty good and the big sandy beaches are unexpected if you've never been.

Skip the bean, it's dumb.

I'll go against the grain and say NYC and Philly. Can do 4-5 days in NYC and a couple in Philly. Easy fast train between the two.

Fly into Boston and stay 3 nights. Rent a car and drive down to Greenwich, CT for a night. You could do a stop at Plymouth Rock along the way. Then drive into NYC and drop off the car. Could easily spend 4 night there. Then fly back from NYC.

The entire museum campus is pretty cool. Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium. Soldier Field is right there too, as well as amazing views of the Chicago skyline.

That time of year, if he likes baseball, could always fly into St. Louis (Cardinals), drive to Chicago (Cubs/White Sox), then over to Omaha for some of the CWS...of course MLB schedule would have to line up for you.

Chicago's Institute of Art is also pretty incredible. Always big name bands playing there if you enjoy live music

I will echo a trip to Chicago or DC. Fit in a Cubs game would be great. Food in both cities is really good. Navy Pier is cool.
The monuments/ sites in DC are awesome.
For DC, especially if you have a car and something rarely suggested. Takes 30 minutes. Drive up Embassy Row. Really cool.

Embassy Row is pretty cool. We drove it coming in from Baltimore when we did a Gettysburg/Philly/Baltimore/DC trip when I was in high school.

If in DC and with a car, Baltimore isn't too far a drive (about an hour without traffic) to see Ft. McHenry and/or an Orioles game if the Nats are on the road; neither is Mount Vernon (30 minutes) or Manassas Battlefield (45 minutes).

Of course you can be in DC a week and not see everything there if you dive into all of the Smithsonian museums and such.
