While our parents are still in good health, we want to take a family vacation to the mountains. It would be 8 adults in total and our collective 7 children. We want to go somewhere like a Banff or Glacier where we have one central lodging location and families can do our own things during the days but also spend time together as a family. Any advice on where?

We have done Glacier (stayed in Coram - airbnb) and Yosemite (stayed in West Yosemite - airbnb) and both were fantastic.

They were both amazing and i'd go back to both again in a second.

Glacier we were able to go to the city of Whitefish and do other non-park things much easier than Yosemite. Not many things to do outside of Yosemite without a long drive.

I've heard amazing things about Banff also. I don't think you can go wrong with any of these.

Just check out things to do and see what peaks your interest most.

Banff is ridiculously beautiful, but keep in mind the town is an hour or more from most of the cool things to see.

I'd look hard at Jackson Hole also, its fantastic for this. Its the best place I've been to where you can be in a normal town and 30-45 mins later feel like you are alone in a vast wilderness with grizzlies and wolves.

Hiking, scenery, and wildlife combination is virtually unbeatable. There's tons of places you can see wildlife from the vehicle too.

The other 2 are fantastic also. Banff is not easy to get to though.

These are all top places to visit. Have you consider smaller locations in say Colorado? Or maybe somewhere like Tahoe?

We have done the Yellowstone/Teton trip before, along with Rocky Mtn national park. Just wanting to try something different. Lodging seems difficult so may need to focus on a few different lodgings vs one large one

Ha, ok your OP read like it would be your first mountain trip with all those people. That's a little different.

Yeah a house that sleeps 15 is not always easy to find.

Time of year will be important. The further north you go the shorter your summer will be generally speaking.

Banff and Glacier are both incredible. We stayed in Whitefish for Glacier and Canmore for Banff. if you decide on Banff, I highly recommend splitting it up b/t Banff and Jasper. Just the drive between the 2 is pretty amazing on the ice fields parkway. There's other national parks such as Yoho that aren't far from Banff. My only beef with Banff is that it's extremely crowded at the popular spots such as Lake Louise.

you can't go wrong with either option imo

we have a similar size family I have planned for in the past. We did Jackson Hole last summer, you have yellow stone, grand teton NP, white water rafting, fly fishing, biking, Jackson Hole resort, Snow king resort, and plenty of restaurants.

Doing Whitefish/Glacier next summer with the same group

We looked into Banff area, but the issue was a lack of lodging for groups our size without it being $50k for a week.

I think we were under $20k for jackson hole and whitefish for lodging.

What did you find for lodging for Glacier? Like how many guests and one house or multiple?

I know it's not mountains but have you thought about southern Utah or northern Arizona?

The Ruby's Inn compound in Bryce Canyon City has a multitude of lodging options. They may not have the Airbnb style house but they have cabins and hotel rooms. You are right at the entrance to Bryce and a short drive to Capitol Reef, Cedar Breaks and Zion.

You could also look about an Airbnb around Flagstaff and be drivable to Grand Canyon, Sedona, Petrified Forest, etc.

For Glacier you can get a big ski lodge near whitefish. They have an alpine slide and the neighborhood is nice to walk in.

In Glacier we stayed in an AIRBNB in Coram. It was a bunch of identical houses all next to each other, like 8-10 of them. Each one fit 5 people easily and all had their own hot tub and outdoor grilling area. It was an easy drive into GNP or Whitefish.
