We normally fly to WDW but have decided to try driving this summer to save a few bucks. We have 2 kids under 6, what are some places you have stopped along the route from Louisiana to Orlando to stretch legs and let kids get out some energy?

Wick has it right. Done it that way a few times when kids were younger. Worked great.

Busy bee gas station in Live Oak, Florida. Like a half arse Buc-ee’s but has clean bathrooms and decent snack selection. Think it’s called the Taj Mastalls of Florida if I’m not mistaken.

Where from in Louisiana?

We drove from roughly south end of Toledo Bend to Destin for the night. Finished the rest to DW the next day.

Destin was roughly the midway point for us.

Leave early af or late af so kids sleep

We do it regularly and leave late at night if we are doing it without getting a hotel, and our stops are bucees and busy bee and that usually gets us there on fuel with a stop or two at random rest areas. Just know imo the stretch from Pensacola to lake city is boring and has almost no where to stop except for Tallahassee

Bucees in Foley
Chipotle in Tallahassee
Anywhere between Lake City and Gainesville

I'll never leave at 2; just don't to disrupt my sleep schedule that much heading into a long demanding vacation definitely make sure we are through the mobile tunnel before 6:30am

Have driven it a few times when the kids were younger. We would leave around 2:00 p.m. and drive to Marianna, FL, which is about 7 hours away to spend the night. That leaves you about 4-1/2 hours to drive in the next day. Also the hotels there aren't the Four Seasons, but are nice and have a Continental breakfast.

We always time it so we leave BR and hit Bucce's or just past Pensacola for Breakfast.

I did the drive a few months back with a 6 year old and 6 month old and it wasn't bad at all. This past trip we held off on Breakfast till the Crestview exit

Chic Fi La
3000 S Ferdon Blvd, Crestview, FL 32536

Avoid Tallahassee if you can, twice I had odd stops there including being locked in a McDonalds with 50 others by a insane manager who was mad bc we were ordering food. (oh yes)

A lot of the rest areas on panhandle are drive and out quick.

A good easy gas station with good food selection and quick on and off is the Loves in Lee. They even have some sort of

3204 Co Rd 255, Lee, FL 32059

You most likely hit traffic in Ocala, don't take crazy waze inspired detours - I did once and wasted an hour.

I'll think of anything else and make a new post - most of all enjoy it man. I love bringing the kids to Disney and seeing it through their eyes.

We make the drive yearly from br. Leave at 4am hit buccees around 7 and miss mobile traffic. Then stop in Tallahassee and push all the way to Orlando unless we need gas or a pee stop.

If you leave at 2am you'll get there around 1pm local time. Whoever drove will be exhausted and the room probably won't be ready. Then what?

The Citrus Shops along 75 are interesting places to stop. Lots of wacky tourist things in the stores, decent rest rooms, stuffed or live alligators depending on the location, and full Florida kitsch.

This thread brings up an interesting discussion.

With young kids, how far is too far to drive before the better option being flying?

Drove from Bossier City several times. It takes around 15 hours with a few bathroom and food stops. Leave at 2am and get there between 5 and 6 pm. Getting there isn't as bad as coming home, Disney World is not a relaxing vacation, it's work if you want to do as much as possible in your time there. Up at the crack of dawn for early hours and stay late for extra magic time in the evening.
The last few times we went, we stopped in Destin for a few days to relax at the beach for a vacation from our vacation. It was well worth it.

It depends. A lot of parents throw iPads at their kids before they back out of the driveway. I forced my kids to look out the window (pre-teen, no phones) for an hour on any trip, and not use devices.

Traveling is just dead time. 14 hours in a car (with a greater risk of accidents) or a couple of hours on a plane. The mistake that I see everyone make, is "oh hey, this ticket is $7 cheaper per seat," but they don't pay attention that it requires you to fly to Chicago with a 5 hour layover to go from Louisiana to Orlando.

About 5 hours is the limit, unless it involved a f@*% beach trip where I had to pack 600# of crap we didn't need for a five day stay.

Yeah the couple of hours in the plane is one thing, but the hour driving to airport to get their 90 minutes before departure, then dealing with getting off the plan, out of the airport and off to the destination...a two hour flight is like 6+ hours...and that's if it's a direct flight.

The couple of times we drove, we left after work and went a couple hours beyond Destin area. Got up early and were there in the morning. On the way home, all the way.

More times than not, if we drive we stay the night as well somewhere between Tallahassee and Lake City. Coming home, the drive straight through makes more sense but I hate arriving feeling exhausted and already worn out.

We won't even consider driving for short trips but for longer trips (a week or more we don't mind starting the trip off with a day 1 relax/pool/movie/grocery day anyway.
