What’s the best and cheapest ways to call while overseas? Looking for something cheaper than putting 2 cell phones on international service for 3 weeks.

I've used Skype for 20 years to make business calls back to the US while traveling and it works great assuming you have wifi. You can pay a little extra to get your own ph# so people can call you or you can have calls from your normal ph# forwarded to that number.Google voice is another option and I'm sure there are a lot of others.

I remember the old days. In the 1970's and early 80's the hotel operator would have to get you an international line which usually took about an hour.

About 20 years ago you used to have to buy 20 minute cards for international minutes. I remember spending about 17 of my 20 minutes arguing with the operator in Italy.

In Paris about 15 years ago, we used to call home from pay phones on the street, but only certain ones would let you do it. The one we could find was on the sidewalk outside Cafe Deux Magot.

Now, if the person you want to call doesn't have viper, just buy the international service. I would rather pay extra than deal with all the hassle.

Just make WiFi enabled calls or a connection via what’s app …. I’m in Asia now and it works great. My phone is on airplane mode all of the time

Verizon's international calling is a monthly plan, activated only if you use it and it's like $10 I believe...thats what we always do

On our recent trips, we've used WhatsApp a lot. Have to have WIFI enabled, but most places have easy access.

We've switched to T-Mobile recently, but for our prior trips when we had Verizon we just added the international calling option for one phone. Used the data package to make local calls to hotels, Google Maps, Uber etc.

Google voice is a good option. Some countries you may need to use a VPN for it. Receives calls from regular phone numbers. WhatsApp is good though you can only have calls with people who also have the app.

I use the Viber app. Free calls if data/wifi is used on both ends of the call or you can load some money and use data/wifi on your end to make a cell call on the other end.

I make lots of international calls, minimum 1 daily.

If you are calling from a US number to a foreign number cell, use whataspp. If you are calling a foreign landline, get skype and pay the $0.10/m

If you from a US number, but overseas, to a US number back home, just use wifi calling. Go to your hotel, office, or restaurant, turn on wifi but cell off, and make the calls.

Verizon's plan works great for me. It's $10/day only if you use it. You make and receive unlimited calls with your regular number. Just be sure when calling someone to use the proper country code first. In the U.S. it is +1 then area code and number

WhatsApp is great to anyone with WhatsApp. Talk to just about any foreigner in the USA and I can almost guarantee you they have it. Every I know from another country uses it to talk to friends/ family at home.

But yeah any wifi calling will work OP. Tons of options. Just can only use it on wifi.

So turn cellular data off and wi-fi calling on?
