These cable and internet companies make things so damn complicated

I was a cord cutter for years, moved last year and decided to take advantage of an introductory rate with Spectrum.
When the time was up, I played the cancel game and while they wouldn't give me the same intro rate, the increase was manageable.
A few months later, I'm looking for something completely unrelated on my account and notice the rate is different. So I look at my statement and my payment went up three months ago (thanks autopay), so I call to ask wtf and they tell me it's something out of their control that they're passing back to customers.
The lady then asks me if we have smart TVs. Well, yes we do. She then informs me that I can turn in the cable boxes and use the app instead and that will offset the increase. Brilliant!
So I install the app on the TVs and head to Spectrum to return the cable boxes, that's when I'm informed that I need to keep a minimum of one box . At that point I had enough and canceled the TV service. They go through the process and tell me what my bill will be moving forward ($69 for internet) and I'm thinking...that can't be right, the internet should only be $49. "Sir, that was the bundle rate" .
So now here I am shopping for internet as well. Sure enough there's an AT&T Fiber offer in the mail!
I start looking at the plan in detail and notice that there's an equipment fee (gateway, $10/mo). I google to see if that's mandatory. Sure enough it is. But didn't the FTC ban that? "Sir the law applies to CABLE companies and cable internet. AT&T is not a cable company. AT&T internet is broadband internet service and is exempt."

I helped a friend cut Internet and cable TV. He now listens to the radio, watches TV over the air and has a Blu-Ray / DVD player. He decided to get rid of his old computer but did keep his cell phone that has a grandfathered unlimited data plan. He said he uses the computers at the library from time to time. He couldn't be happier.

I have decisions to make soon. I have Dish network, and have for 20 years and it's been fine.
I'm moving to a place in the summer that has ATT fiber, up to 1Gb speed. I'm sure they will want to bundle DirectTV, but I'm really considering just doing internet and nothing else, and figuring out streaming options. I'm currently paying about $150/month for internet/Dish, so their internet is like $60/month.
I've heard mixed reviews on DirectTV, and that ATT is looking to maybe get rid of it, so I'm trying to figure out what my best options are.
Advice?

If there are options that do not involve DTV/AT&T, do that instead.

I don’t understand why I have to have a cable box to have cable.
I’ve asked cox that several times. I want your service, but I don’t want your equipment and it’s fees. And they say well sir if you don’t have a box, how will you watch tv?
Well ma’am. I don’t want your 260 channels, or your HD fee, or your DVR fee. I only want access to ESPN and fox sports and maybe a few other channels, all which I can access via their own apps with a login I would get from you.

Directv is getting too expensive. They are trying to push off the cheapo crap customers and keep only those willing to pay for the service at a high level.
ATT fiber has several speed options. You should be able to get 300Mbps (synchronous) for around $40/month. I'd suggest that over the 1Gbps service.
When AT&T TV gets rolled out in your area, you will be able to bundle it with your fiber service.

They make a killing on those things. Rent it until it breaks, it pays itself multiple times over.
What I noticed yesterday when I was shopping Fiber deals is that there's a cap of data (1TB/Month). And you pay $10/50GB after that. Or an additional $30/month for unlimited data. So they make damn sure to stick it to you if you're switching from cable to streaming services

I noticed that as well with the cable companies. They will always find a way to get their money.

Well, I can avoid DTV if I want, but ATT has the fiber where I'm building, so I will be stuck with them.

Glad someone mentioned the data caps. The solution is competition which they have lobbied the govt for less of. In areas where Comcast and ATT have high speed, there are not data caps. Same with Comcast and Verizon fiber competing. However everywhere else it's screw the customer. I was a 5+yr cord cutter who now has Comcast tv cable because the bundle was cheaper than any legit service I could buy bundled with my internet. So I'll enjoy it for 2 years until they raise my price, then I'll be off to look for something else.
Of course we're spoiled with just 1 option for gigabit service when a lot of the country can't even get better than 3mbs dsl from ATT and that's all there is available. Wish competition was quicker to move in to my area.

Frick AT&T. I pay for 300 Mbps service...but my upload and download speeds are actually around 10. They give me the runaround, and keep jacking up my rate.

this is the dirty little backdoor they're using to jack your rates up while you're still technically 'covered' under a contract for a lower amount.
comcast has an entire army of dirty little lawyers who figured this out and they're reaping MILLIONS AND MILLIONS from the poor customers they've already fleeced to death.

Yeah it sucks.
I'm pretty much stuck with spectrum at $70/mo because I'm pretty sure I use more than 1 TB of data. (spectrum stopped tracking so I'm not sure how much I've been using). I'll try to find it somewhere in the router settings
