I just bought a basic laptop(HP I3) recently and seem to be having speed issues with the WiFi. I like everyone else have the 2 and 5g signals and only am logging what seems to be the only one offered now through Spectrum. My new modem or router is supposed to choose best signal for your device rather than switching between the two. I get plenty of speed, 400 mbps which of course gets to between 200-300 on my LapTop when I run Ookla, but am still getting a drag/lag when browsing or emailing.
I'm also not downloading anything anywhere else in the house and my computer doesn't have tons of programs up at once either.
Sometimes restarting my laptop works as it grabs on the the best signal each time but a pain in the butt to do this every time that I walk away from my computer.
Is there a setting on my computer I can change that would help?
Or is there a small adapter I can buy online that would help?

Try using an ethernet connection. Does the problem persist or is everything peppy?

If it persists, how much RAM do you have? (you can find this out by going to your Start/Windows button, click on Run then type in dxdiag then clicking OK (click Yes on the digital signing box). Under the System tab (which is what it will open up to), it will tell you how much Memory you have.

What version of Windows? (Start -> Run -> winver then click OK)

Does the laptop have a HDD (Hard Disk Drive), SSD (Solid State Drive) or M.2 drive? For this get the Run window up again and this time type in msinfo32 then click OK.

Under Components, then Storage you'll see the listing for Disks. Click on that and see what the Media Type is.

If everything is always peppy with the internet connection you might need to update your wifi drivers. HP normally loads software which can do this for you (can't remember the name of it), but if you don't see it you can always just do a Windows Update and it should pull any new drivers. Start->Settings (the gear/cog icon) -> Update & Security -> Windows Update. After it runs you may see a link with "View optional updates", if so then click on that and grab all the updates there (these will be driver and firmware updates).

Then I'd say your wifi isn't the problem if your symptoms are:

getting a drag/lag when browsing or emailing.

Next time it slows down check how much RAM is being used. With Windows 10 the slowdown seems to happen around 80%. That's when it uses the hard drive to supplement the RAM and slows to a crawl.

It's also closing all your programs and clearing your RAM when you do this. If you are using in the ballpark of 80% RAM next time it slows down you have 2 choices. Add more RAM (not always an option with laptops), or close out some apps or restart your computer.

You bought an I3 processor which will be the bottom of the barrel. Only thing you can do is add more ram or change to an ssd or m2 disk for the hard drive.

which means the entire computer is probably bottom of the barrel.

I try to stick to I7's or higher now for a main laptop.

Same here. I just got a new laptop with a 12th gen i7-1260P w/ 16GB RAM and its pretty damn zippy.

WiFI speeds I wouldn't think should be affected if the computer isn't running multiple programs and loaded with old BS. I mean the thing is new. Sometimes its fine and and other times it obviously lags. Frustrating.

Wound you run 2g or 5g? not sure I even have an option here since there is only one option when searching for my Wifi so it automatically connects to 5g.
