Streaming Device?

I am starting to have some issues streaming with my seven year old Sony HDTV, so I am checking into streaming devices. From what I hear the Roku is one of the best one's. The ultra version looks good, but it has some features that I won't use. One is the headphones and the other one is the Dolby Atmos. Are other models just as good?

the other one is the Dolby Atmos.

I got an X Box one a few years ago to be my streaming service and the motherfricker doesn't have Hoopla
Same with Kanopy

If you dont need HDR and you dont need atmos, the only thing left to ask is do you care about frame rate matching?
YES - if you do care about frame rate matching, appleTV 4k is the only high level solution that will auto frame rate match every streaming service.
NO - if you dont care about frame rate matching and/or your TV can do reverse 3:2 pulldown, literally any device would work fine (Chromecast with google TV, Fire TV sticks, Roku stick, Roku Ultra, Walmart ONN box, etc.)

I use Roku Ultra or whatever the box is called.

Roku is what we use.

I really enjoy the Firestick 4k max. It's a very powerful and fast device especially for the price. They'll throw it on sale every so often.

I've used them all, except for the Nvidia Shield. I prefer the Apple TV over the Roku, and hate the Fire Sticks. I set my Apple TV home screen to go straight to my apps. It's cleaner and quicker to go to whatever app you want, IMO.
I just looked at the NVidia Shield....didn't know they had a remote with a backlight. That's a huge plus. I recently bought another Apple TV, but probably would have bought the NVidia Shield to try it, if for no other reason than the backlit remote.
Having a backlit remote is fricking awesome when you are watching something in the dark.

Are you in the apple ecosystem? If yes, go apple tv 4k.
Are you in the android ecosystem? If yes, go google chromecast tv OR if you want to go Porche mode go with nvidia shield tv.
The only issue I have with the nvidia shield tv is that sometimes for certain apps (amazon prime), the audio gets out of sync. The apple tv is the only device that nails audio 100% of the time.

I have never had an Apple product. The only reason I have Apple TV is it was free when I got a T-Mobile phone. I try to stay away from Google as much as I can. My wife has a Google Chromebook and we both hate it. The Nvidia model was more than I wanted to spend. So I got the Roku Ultra on the way.

I think the roku ultra is a fine device. I have never used it but I think it's the best for roku out there, from the little I know.

I prefer the Android user interface. I have a tv with Android built in, a Google Chromcast, n Onn box from Walmart, all of which are Android.
I also have Fire sticks and Roku devices.
I have never had Apple TV, although my parents had one before they switched to Roku.
To me, Roku is the simplest, but seems to be the fastest.
Fire TV has a nice UI, but seems to take longer to load.
Android has a UI similar to Fire TV, but seems to load faster.

I have the Nvidia Shield in my living room and firesticks every where else.

4K firestick.
Won’t ever have anything different.

I have: FireTV 4k stick, Roku 4k, and Apple TV.
If you have the extra funds to splurge, I would get the Apple TV, especially if it's for your main TV. Amazon has them for $129 (down from $180).
Reasons I dislike FireTV are advertisements all over the place, constantly changing UI, performance drops with each device update.
Reason I dislike Roku is a stale app store.
Reasons I like Apple TV: integrates seamlessly with my iPhone, minimalistic/simplistic/aesthetic UI, best performance of the bunch.
If you watch a lot of sports, you can multicast different games on the ESPN app (only on the Apple TV).

If money isn’t an obstacle, I am a fan of the Apple TV’s. I have 4 of them.

Been using Rokus for two years now. Stopped using the fire sticks because they got too slow. Roku is easy to use and I like the option of turning in headphones through my phone. The streaming stick was $30 for the 2019 version on Amazon recently.

Apple TV. I had the Amazon Fire TV but hated the ads on it.
