I'm wondering if any of you have tried this with any success. If so how did you accomplish this? Through some research it appears it may be as simple as a cable that goes from your phone headphone output to an RCA connection on your receiver.
If you've done this I would like to hear some details and how well it worked.

That's all there is to it, works well. You also may be able to get a bluetooth adapter for the receiver.

I did this for a while, but tit started to sound bad. I think my connectors were going bad. I then found a cheap Pioneer bluetooth capable receiver on Woot, and it's been fantastic. I am moving next month to a newer house that has been wired to speakers in a few of the rooms and the back porch. Kinda excited.

Thanks for the reply. Now I just have to figure out where to go in this receiver. It's an old Panasonic VSX- 9500S receiver.
The Bluetooth option would be the ultimate solution. I think I'll try the cables first and if that works I'll go that route.

I have had good luck doing the rca cables using my old classic ipod that refuses to die. It sounds OK, just don't expect stellar sound from compressed mp3 files.

ETA THis is just something I found online, apparently the sound quality sucks based on TD feedback.

A shame you don't have an aux input. In my experience, those work better than the cord to the RCAs.

The Aux input on my old Pioneer receiver uses RCA's and sounds fine. OP could probably just run the RCA's to another input - CD or Tape or something and it would likely work.

It will. That's what i did with my older receiver with neither aux nor BT. It just sucked. may have been an issue with the receiver.

If the connections sound like they're going out, a squirt or two of contact cleaner will usually fix that problem. Just make sure it's dry before hooking the cables back up.

I bought that exact unit to use on an old Harmon/Kardon/Bose 901 setup and honestly, it sounds pretty terrible. I went back to using an RCA to headphone jack adapter cable. I still would like to find a decent sounding bluetooth unit with a little better sound quality.

I had this Bluetooth adapter and it sucked. I bought a echo dot and hooked it up to the CD or something rca on the receiver.

Chromecast audio is what you need. Better sound quality than Bluetooth, and you're not limited by any range. Plugs right into RCA input.

They stopped making them, but they're still for sale.

It works with basically every music server. You can also stream hi res lossless audio which you cannot do with Bluetooth.

As others posters have said connecting an Echo Dot or Google Chromecast audio are good solutions for streaming music to a speaker or audio system.

If you'd like to stay with a Bluetooth solution I've had good performance with this adapter: LINK

So, will this turn a regular receiver into a smart speaker et up? Like..hey Google, play my music. That ability would probably make me actually pay the $9.99 for Google play.

If you don’t want to deal with chrome cast or Bluetooth you can get an airport express and use the new airplay 2. This keeps everything in the apple ecosystem

I have a Chromecast audio connected to my garage receiver. For some reason I can't get the iHeart app to work with it. The app gives me the option to cast to it, but no sound comes out.

Update: First of all thanks to all for the informative discussion.
I went immediately to the local Wal-Mart and bought the cable adapter for $6.96. It works great!
I've discovered that the Samsung Music app works really well as it has an equalizer which is needed.
