Cox bill going up to $265 this month

Granted, we have some premiums, but that is ridiculous regardless.
I have been a cordcutter-in-transition for a while now as I have gotten the wife on board with the changes, and this latest increase finally got her to say "frick it!"
Our bill was already high (imo) at $208 in January, then it went up to $217 in February, $221 in September, and now $264 is due in November. Apparently our promo pricing has run out, and yeah it's easy to get that pricing back, but I've been tired of those games (and now the wife is, too). They just keep pushing and pushing to see what they can get out of you, it gets old.
So of course when you follow the phone menu and you press the number to drop services, you get sent straight to someone in retentions. But rather than just insisting on getting dropped to internet-only, I humored her pitch to see what they're doing to compete with the online services. I told her I wanted the basics (TNT, TBS, USA, ESPN, etc) plus ESPNU, SECN, Bravo, HGTV, DIY, nickjr, and disneyjr, along with the internet... give me your absolute best bottom dollar pricing. She told me $170-something was the best she could do.
Minus the $60-ish for internet, and that's $110 just for TV. I told her I can get all that from Vue, add HBO and even the showtime/epix hits package, and I'm only at maybe $70 after taxes. I would be paying $40 less and getting more of the stuff we actually watch. And they won't bump the prices in a year forcing me to call again for the old pricing.
I told her the thing that's killing them is they are charging $37/month for DVR service on two TVs. I can kind of understand $8.50 apiece for the boxes, but tacking on a bullshite $20 fee for "DVR Service" is idiotic. If I'm paying for TV service, and I'm paying for a box with the ability to record the TV service, what's the extra fee for? To enable the box to do what it's built for?
So I told her I just want internet, and of course that can't just be straightforward. Internet by itself would have been $70-something, but if I add basic cable the bill drops to $62. So tomorrow I'm going to bring my DVR boxes back, and pick up a minibox to throw in a drawer somewhere.
Good riddance.

They are squeezing out whatever juice is left in that dying business model. I don't know where you live, but make sure to compare prices on internet. I have 100 down/10 up internet through Time Warner for about $45 a month. If you added something like playstation Vue or DirecTV Now onto that you could get TV and Internet for roughly $100 a month after taxes. That's a huge savings.

cable companies suck so hard. they charge for freaking EVERYTHING.
i just fought comcast again to take the following off my bill:
- HD "upgrade" ($10/mo) jesus its 2016, is HD still a 'premium' option you fricksticks!!!
- modem charge. i bought my own modem in 1997 and have never rented one from those frickers but somehow this still finds its way back onto my bill. every time its a nightmare process to get this removed and charges reversed and yessir..it shows back up again 6 months later despite MULTIPLE PROMISES by the comcast idiot i'm talking to its been removed and wont come back.
- data cap overages. I paid roughly $200 in bullshite data overage charges last year. bullshite. they drug their feet for like 3 months after saying 'data cap is raised' so i continued to get hit on that until like june of this year
i hate cable companies so bad.

Might as well hook it up for local channels.

We cut after the cable bill reached 170. Now I pay 50 for internet and that is it, use my firestick and watch ESPN, WatchESPN, NBC, and the Netflix/Amazon for TV.
So went from 170 to maybe 60 a month.

Cox is effectively cutting their own throat. I can't wait for the day I have an option to change internet providers. It will be great having them out of my life.

DVR is such a ripoff. Just about every channel has their shows available on their website or through their app the next day.

I have had the same problem as OP. Currently under contract with Directv until March. First year pricing was great but after that they just keep going up. Bill is $140 per month just for TV. Currently I have 35 mbps down, 2 mbps up with the only ISP in my neighborhood. Will that be sufficient for cord cutting with the wife streaming Netflix and me gaming. Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't pretend to be a cable executive but the strategy of jacking up prices to combat against lost revenues due to cord cutting seems poor.
I was paying $220 with Cox. Switched to Uverse and now paying $100 less with more options. I know everyone hates Uverse but I haven't had a problem with it. Their UI is light years faster than Cox (it had gotten so laggy I stopped using the guide).

It will be $62 and then the FCC fees and tax and the mini box fee should put you around $70.
Gotta love it!

And a lot of them add in commercials that you can't skip.
But you can skip them with DVR

But yeah, I'm still worried. If the bill comes in higher, I'm going to drop them and switch to the small local company in my town. And yeah, I also asked three times to be sure I won't be under contract, and that I can cancel at any time with no fees.

I cut the cord, kind of. I sometimes depend on a friend's COX login information for ESPN and FOX Sports, like right now for the World Series.
But other than that, I'm only spending $15/month for HBO Now. The lady and her family share passwords for DirecTV, Netflix and Hulu so we are saving a lot of money.
I offered to pay a portion of my buddy's cable bill but he said not to worry about it. So I don't feel bad for anything.
ETA: I recommend the Amazon Fire TV boxes with KODI installed for all your TV's. They should be reduced this time of year and especially for Cyber Monday.

The one constant in all these cord cutting things is needing the buddy or the daddy to give you a login for something.

I dont understand why people still have cable.

What do I need a login for? I don't have cable and have everything I need.
