I don't disagree because I do appreciate players and teams who are the highest level but it's a known thing for many people to hate the best. I don't get it myself but there it is.

Risk. You reduce risk of getting caught off guard in a counter-attack if you eliminate any chance of that by holding your team back.
That's the idea at least. It doesn't work well if you aren't possessing the ball at all.
