The article has it backwards. Both countries will be trying to win in order to get Spain instead of having to face the US.

Stupid article. The most likely outcome even yesterday was 3rd place from group B being the matchup.

That is the Florioization of media. You look at an event with several possible outcomes. You pick the one outcome that is the most chaotic or advances your own personal agenda and go with it as if it's set in stone. That's how Mike Florio covers the NFL.

Someone in the daily thread was saying Japan is planning for the Netherlands to finish 1st on GD.
The Japanese are better than Sweden, but would score own goals to finish 3rd & avoid Brazil.

Japanese culture wouldn't allow them to do something so dishonourable. If they lose to Sweden because Sweden was better than them, they can live with that. But to allow Sweden to win because of fear...they would never be able to live with such cowardice.
Ivory Coast secures second place with a draw. Curacao win puts in second place if Ecuador draws or loses to Germany. Ecuador win would give them the nod for second through GD over Curacao.
Friday at 7:00 pm CST is the match everybody is most interested in: Spain and Uruguay will be a battle for first place, winner take all. If Cabo Verde wins, they automatically advance, no matter what happens in the Spain Uruguay game. A Cabo win guarantees them second place in the group A Cabo win and a Uruguay win would mean that The group winner will be determined by GD. Both are currently at a 0 GD.

I don’t understand how people think Algeria can afford to lose that game on purpose and still get in.

You mean like all the people running with the “US vs England on the 4th” narrative even though the brackets had all been released and Group D wasn’t playing Group L in any of them?
