What is each recent World Cup known for?

And what will this one be remembered for?
For instance, South Africa was without a doubt the Vuvuzelas. I can still hear them to this day
Brazil in 2014 was 7-1 Germany for me.

I can't think of 2010 without thinking of Diego Forlan balling out.

So far I think it's the grandeur of the event. I like to think I am pretty well traveled and worldly with a deep sense of love and patriotism for our country but a clear eyed view of its shortcomings...
But I think much of the rest of the world has forgotten or been led astray by their domestic media about what the U.S. is really like (much of, if not all of it, due to Trump, whom I admittedly loathe even as someone who leans more conservative than not), they forget that this is the most powerful and richest empire in the history of the world.
They think guns, healthcare horror stories, obesity, racial animosity, and so on and so on.
The stadiums, the scale, the wealth involved, the almost unlimited reservoir of human capital in this country, the beauty both natural and man-made, the show and artistry, the creativity, the genius, the innovation...
They forgot about all that. Big time.
We're effectively putting on a show where we host at the equivalent of Camp Nou, Stade de France, Iduna, Bernabeu, Wembley, San Siro, Berlin, Old Trafford, and Tottenham all at once but also have like 3X as many hosts that weren't even included in this (just off the top of my head, Chicago, Baltimore, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Denver, San Diego, New Orleans, DC, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Tampa, Charlotte, about 12 SEC stadiums, about 12 Big Ten stadiums, etc., etc.).

I wonder if anyone here goes back farther than 1994.
For my dad, all I know is he had 3 cats in 1958. They were named Pele, Didi, and Vava.
I didn’t watch anything pre 1994, but the ones I know of through cultural osmosis are
1986: Maradona’s Hand of God
1990: Roger Milla and the improbable Cameroon run
For tournaments I’ve watched
USA 94: The divine ponytail. Hristo Stoichkov and his amazing tournament. Maradona’s celebration and his failed drug test the next day. RIP Andres Escobar.
France 98: Zidane’s redemption arc (red card against I think, Saudi Arabia followed by amazing play in the knockout rounds), Croatia’s first tournament and the goals of Davor Suker. 18 year old Michael Owen’s amazing goal against Argentin and then a few minutes later, in a rare moment of losing his cool, Beckham gets a red card after Diego Simeone sells the hell out of a tap.
Korea/Japan 2002: Ronaldo’s dominant performance, Turkey’s run to the semis, USA playing two great games (Portugal opener and then the original dos a cero against Mexico) and the damn Torsten Frings handball. Senegal beating France in the opener. Lots of big names underperforming, including the French and Argentine national teams.
Germany 2006: “If you want my shirt that much, just ask your sister from last night.” After all of the speculation, that was the sentence that ended Zidane’s career. Germany’s return to form playing an attacking style that won over neutrals. Fan fests being popular as a new official event. The chippy England-Portugal game and Ronaldo’s wink.
South Africa 2010: The damn vuvuzelas. Landon Donovan…”Goal goal USA. The USA are certainly through. You couldn’t write a script like this.” Hand of God, Part 2: Suarez intentionally gets a red card and Asamoah Gyan misses the penalty, only for Uruguay to advance on a penalty shootout. Spain keeps on rolling and the tiki taka revolution is cemented. Anelka and the player revolt against Domenech on the bus.
Brazil 2014: “My N***a Klose”-Rihanna. Germany dominates the tournament. Brazil goes down 7-1 to the Germans. James Rodriguez scores two all-time classic goals. Lots of defensive stalemates in the knockouts.
Russia 2018: Ramenez La Coupe à la Maison, Mbappe and co win the Cup. The Belgian golden generation makes a strong run.
Qatar 2022: Argentina defeats France in one of the greatest games ever played. Messi delivers in the clutch and then blows off Salt Bae after the final, establishing himself as a legend around the world
, Morocco’s improbably run after knocking off Spain and Portugal.
USA, Canada, and Mexico 2026: Freddy discovers the US, I meet Riyad Mahrez in the elevator and my mom asks him if he is a fan or a player (I realize that doesn’t go beyond me
), all of the stars deliver, lots of goals in the opening round.
