What does that have to do with group stage?

I wouldn't mind if Gio got the start. Give him more time to get into the game and his flow and see what magic he can produce. But, I'd rather have Weah in and Gio sub in around 70 depending on how the game is going.

I don’t trust Gio’s body to hold up for any 60-70 minute stretch. I think he’s at his best as a sub and we need him healthy if we want to make a run in this thing. Agree on giving Weah the start. His and Antonee’s pace down the left is terrifying for a back line.

Is there going to be enough space to utilize that pace if Australia is willing to sit deep and concede 65-70% possession?

If Pulisic doesn’t start, I think you play Aaronson and counter press the hell out of them. Then you sub in Gio at the end of the outrageous 3rd quarter they’ve created.

I’m going 1-0 USA because I’m hearing rumors the Australians are gonna park the bus to go for a draw. USA scores something after the 80th minute

I hope that Puli's calf is actually healed. Playing with a strained calf is an invitation to Blown Achilles Land.

USA just needs a Draw at worst and then we'll likely win the Group still.

A loss and the whole WC is derailed. Australia wins the group and we get Argentina in the Round of 16.

Fun fact... on its way to a 3rd place finish in the 1st ever World Cup tournament in 1930

The USA defeated Paraguay by 3 goals in the group stage

ETA: even more fun fact... US forward Bert Patenaude got the 1st hat trick in World Cup history in that 3-0 win over Paraguay in the 1930 World Cup group stage

I imagine there will be less space than we found against Paraguay for sure. But I’m not sure we have a better option. Gio will not be able to track back as well on counters and that will be crucial today. I suppose we could move Tillman to the wing and have Berhalter start next to McKennie, but that might make us too soft in the middle. Would prefer to give Weah the start and keep Tillman central.

ETA: Forgot about Aaronson. Wouldn’t mind seeing him get the start, although he’s better at counter pressing than breaking down a compact defense.

So Poch's words on CP sound like he ain't playing,

Probably for the best. Australia is going to play dirty, they would 100% target his legs.

I'd roll with Weah and bring Gio on again as a super sub.

I'd go the other way since Weah is faster. Like above, I think Gio's toughness is going to help set the tone early on for us.
