I swear to god if this somehow involves Gio, I'm going to be so pissed at him throwing away his chance to become the best talent the USMNT has ever produced.

Someone tweeted that Gregg’s wife was teammates with Gio’s mom at UNC…

At this point I’m just praying it’s someone like Wynalda and not one of the Reyna’s (who really seem like decent people).

Gio’s real dad is Gregg Berhalter…that’s what’s happening.

100%, because if he did this or knew about it, then he should never be allowed back to the USMNT.

Huh?

Gregg needs to be replaced anyway regardless of any of this drama.

And Gio was and is needed for the USMNT to compete.

If Gio was in on blackmailing a coach you want to keep him around?

So what does he do to the next coach?

Very unrealistic.

Dude barely played and we crashed and burned out of WC.

If Gio was involved, he’s done with the National team. There’s no coming back from blackmailing your coach.

Had he not then investigations could have happended quietly now he threw gas in fire imo. If they are investigating he had no reason to report this publically. He must feel they were going to fire him so did a prevention strike.

I really don’t understand Gregg’s motivation for giving such a detailed breakdown of the whole affair. A much simpler and less detailed statement would have sufficed for getting out in front of it.

I’m both criticizing Gregg and defending him here. Nobody should have blackmailed him, and he shouldn’t feel the need to defend himself against something his victim forgave him for a long time ago, but again I don’t understand the way he responded.

If the Reynas are involved…smh

The whole thing is just preposterous.

Sharing money with the women's team and now a coach that kicks women? USMNT = bunch of cucks and sissies. No wonder we suck.

With today's culture and outrage over literally anything, I totally get why he went into great detail. This goes beyond the USMNT job, he knows if he wants to coach anywhere else (specifically MLS again with their snowflake fan base) then he needed to get ahead of it and not only explain what happened but what steps he took to rehab himself.

It's insane someone would have to take those steps, but here we are unfortunately.

Reading US soccer’s statement in concert with Gregg’s statement I now suspect that they coordinated on these statements with the ultimate goal of giving him a new contract once their investigation concludes that his statement is accurate.

I can easily picture 1990s Gregg in an oversized Billabong t-shirt and Umbro shorts kicking someone.

I get why he made a detailed statement. This was likely the worst event of his life (and entirely his fault) and he thought it was settled after 30 years.

Gregg doesn’t give off the “macho caveman” vibe, which is why this is much more surprising than Dana White or Chris Beard doing more.

I’m sure he has matured a lot since the early 90s but even at his most brash, I doubt he gave off wifebeater vibes.

However, after kicking Rosalind, he probably immediately went from being the hotshot freshman from the northeast to being the most hated member of the men’s team by the dominant women’s team. Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Danielle Egan all likely found out and if I had to guess, had (reasonably so) very negative first impressions of him.

His letter was far from generic and I don’t doubt that he grew as a result of this.

I suspect his time with the USMNT was done before this, but he is still pretty young and has 10-15 more years of coaching if he wants to do it.

This is his way of remaining a viable candidate for MLS.

@ManagerTactical on Twitter seems to be strongly implying it was the Reynas.

Wynalda is denying that he was involved.

I don’t see how Wynalda would have known. He was playing soccer literally across the country at the time.

And I really don’t think anyone new learned about this stuff after the early 90s. Maybe Nomar Garciappara of all people.

And it’s certainly possible that John Harkes, Tony Meola, Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Cindy Parlow, and Tab Ramos knew (especially Hamm and Lilly).

But if they had problems with the USMNT hiring a guy who kicked a female, they didn’t suddenly start feeling bad about it after several years of Gregg leading the team. And they also didn’t learn about this after three decades.
