Absolutely not. That ball was drilled behind the back four but several yards in front of the six. It was just an inch-perfect ball. Howard would never have gotten there.

I'm having a really hard time blaming Cameron on this goal. The player comes up behind him as he's moving to position. I can't tell who it was, but the scorer was initially covered but our guy fell back and lost his mark. We had 3 guys in the box covering space and one lost his man.

Couple of things from my perspective on comments in this thread:
1) Howard played it correctly. I do, however, wish he could have stayed on his feet longer on Nani's goal.
2) Cameron mistake on the first goal is not a case of, "eh, it happens". This is a starting center back on a World Cup squad. You must be able to clear that ball 10 times out of 10. Now, they may not all go to midfield, but they must all at least get out of danger. In fact, that's a mistake that I would be frustrated with my HIGH SCHOOL center backs.
3) Beasley did right. He had no cover on the play, and he knew he was defending a player better than him.
4) Ronaldo's cross was perfect AND it was early. I expected him to take an extra touch, and I imagine that some of the defenders may have as well. But the fact remains that it was beautiful and perfect.
5) These things happen from time to time in soccer. Some times in our favor, some times not. In 2010, we defeated Algeria on the last kick. In 2011, Abby Wambach headed home an equalizing header in the 122nd minute against Brazil. It took a perfect ball to beat us and dadgummit that's what Ronaldo supplied.

Yes i have. Beasley was scared to make a move because it was Ronaldo. Even if you are beat take the card and foul him. Any other player you take the foul waste time and after clearing it ball game. Instead they gave him room and he put the ball in a perfect spot and they scored. Credit to Portugal for the goal but the whole thing could have been avoided with a foul for the team.

Wut. The last thing Beasley would have wanted to do there was foul and give Portugal a free kick where they could slam everybody in the box. Beasley not to blame there at all. The best player in the world was on the break. He held him up, kept him in front of him, didn't let him come inside, and forced a long cross. It was just unfortunate that our defenders and midfielders didn't track that runner. It was a perfect ball but we had ample numbers back to defend it.

In retrospect, yes.
At the time...the replay shows he could have gotten there, but as has been noted, there were 2 US players that should have done something. Also, ask the Korean keeper about being a half-step late on a cross.
Frankly, I am still wondering why the guy on CR did not just shoulder him off the ball. At worst, a yellow, but a free kick that would allow the US to defend better.
That said, it was a perfect fricking cross and a beautiful finish.

Beasley was on his back foot, the second he would have tried to dart for Ronaldo, he would be burnt toast.

I saw some stills of the play, he was even or further up the field than Ronaldo when he delivered the cross. Why? Because Omar.

There is a good tactical breakdown on SI.com with a great picture from the opposite end that shows the shite show that was our defending at the end.
It also takes the culpability off of Cameron for the final goal.
