Should Tim Howard have come off his line on Ronaldo's cross?

I'm no soccer expert, but I do follow it peripherally. Ballack was just asked on ESPN if he thought Howard should have come out, and he said no. He blamed US defenders ball watching, which I could see. However, it appeared that Howard had time to come off his line and cut this cross off. Admittedly, it was far from his best game. Thoughts?

If Germans, then let's beat their asses.

The ball is one of the best crosses I've ever seen in my life.

Its right in "corridor of uncertainty" where the keeper doesn't know whether to come or not. Theres the chance that if he goes he can be caught out by someone getting there infront of him, he may be caught out by the bend, or if he doesnt catch it cleanly drop it into Valeras path.

No blame on Howard imo, Cameron is on his heels, and its also pretty perfect cross/header

The blame is on the defenders for not marking the only fricking person that could have gotten to the ball. Cameron didn't even know the Portugal guy was there. Talk about a lack of situational awareness.

The forward ran between two center backs, and neither marked him.

Probably didn't have to win the ball, just provide enough interference to throw off his timing.

That didn't happen.

Cameron cost us the game. It's hard to imagine him giving the ball to Nani when he could have trapped it or cleared the ball on the first goal then take into account getting beat on the final pass.

I'm a fan and supporter of Cameron but it wasn't Bradley or Howard's fault, it was Cameron.

It was a mis-hit clearance. shite happens.

When the guy runs between the two CBs and neither go with him, they're both culpable.

Actually, it looks like Cameron is closer. I mean, I guess Besler is watching the guy at the 18, but if the ball was going to that guy, he wouldn't have gotten there either.

Where the frick is Omar? Why do we only have 5 guys back (with two more trailing) up a goal with 30 seconds left?

From that gif, it looks like howard was about 5 yards away and was definitely not going to get to it. No one has really brought this up specifically, but yedlin was also very lazy running behind varela. He didn't communicate well with cameron either.

I hope you are joking? You're defending Cameron on the first goal.

Cameron was closer, sorry. The situation should have been handled better we all agree.

I thought about this today maybe he could have gotten there and prevented it but I can't fault howard on that goal.

another interesting thought was should someone have just taken the guy out and forced a penalty kick? Im leaning to no because a header on a cross is no sure thing.

There are a lot of what-if scenarios that played out in the last goal. One that i am wondering about is why Beasley gave ronaldo so much room and didnt foul him. I understand he is ronaldo, but Beasley defended with fear against him.

To answer op, Howard made the right decision staying put. Cameron shouldnt have let the only guy in the box go unmarked. As much as it pains me, that was a beautiful goal and might have still gone in even if he was marked properly

I think if anyone else was on the ball, that goal doesn't happen.

Not only is Ronaldo the only one capable of whipping in an inch-perfect cross like that, but also because he is the second best player in the world. Cameron and Beasley were so scared of him potentially beating Beasley off the dribble that they lost all awareness of their surroundings.

Serious question, have you played soccer before? Because it sounds like you wanted Beasley to just rush at him. If he were to do that, Ronaldo easily beats him and we are in an even worse situation.

Nah, there's nothing Howard could've done on that goal. Defenders should have done much better, though.

It wasn't a poorly placed pass or giveaway in the center circle (like we did once a game under Bob Bradley, it seemed). He tried to volley a clearance in a crowded penalty area and shanked it, and it happened to land directly at Nani's feet. If he shanks it 5 more yards in any direction, we don't have this discussion.

He fricked up. shite happens.

This.

I guess you can second guess Howard, but it is totally pointless. He is probably 4th or 5th on the "blame list".

This is the main thing. It isn't that we weren't covering. They weren't in the same stratosphere. I might even say it doesn't matter that it was Ronaldo there, plenty of players would make that play. Clear, easy cross with no disruption at all? Ninja please.

That being said, he NAILED it.

Him air-mailing a rocket fifteen feet to the right of the near post? He no showed for 190+ minutes of this WC until that cross.
