Brasil at home in World Cup

anybody think they might severely underperform at home as the Ruskies are in Olympic Ice Hockey?
Obviously not talking about craziness like failing to advance out of group play - but what about getting knocked off in round of 16 or 8?

History has shown that the host country receives a huge boost during WC. South Africa in 2010 being a notable exception. Host countries have won 6 of 17 tournaments. And performed well on other occasions. A couple of recent examples of host countries who seemed to outperform expectations: U.S. in '94. South Korea in '02.
I would expect Brazil to go a long way, but stranger things have happened.

It's not like they are some awesome team. If they get a bad draw they could easily get knocked out in the quarters in a knockout round format.
There are certainly 5 or 6 teams who could beat Brazil and it really wouldn't be that surprising at all imo.

After the Confeds Cup, I'd have them as favorites... I wouldn't discount the other "bigger" SA teams Uruguay and Argentina either...

Obviously a chance they lose in the knockout rounds. Weight of Expectations, draw, form, injuries, card suspensions etc. all come into play.
All things being equal, I see them in the finals againt a European team (insert Germany, Italy or Spain here).
Some of the players Brazil is counting on the most are experienced, but not necessarily old and experienced. I don't know if they will have any problems being composed with all of the pressure on them for a final. I can see a team like Germany taking advantage of some over-aggressiveness and pressing (not tactical, but trying to hard to make the play).
With each advancement, the pressure will build on that team.

There's always a chance an experienced, talented side like Germany, Spain, Italy or Argentina could upset Brasil but I would be a bit surprised.
I fully expect them to samba like Elis Regina and not leave a booty still all over the country until autumn.

I think at this moment, the WC is Brazil's to lose.
Keep in mind, a European side has never won a WC hosted in a South American country (or vice versa). That in mind, I wouldn't mind seeing Germany win it. I typically like Brazil, but I don't find this current squad very likeable.

Brasil would definitely be my heavy favorite to win. But I wouldn't be that shocked to see Germany, Spain, or even the Netherlands winning it all.

We really didn't do any better than South Africa when we hosted.

South Africa won a game and finished third in the group, just like us. We just had the fortune of it being a 24 team tournament.

My original point wasn't to compare the U.S. to South Africa. The point was to show that the U.S. wasn't expected to advance from their group, and did as a host nation. South Korea wasn't expected to make semis in '02, and did as a host nation. South Africa failed to advance - not to take anything away from them but just not a great example of the point I was trying to make.

You could say that. But they had never won a WC game in five previous World Cups (14 previous games). Then they host the tournament, win 3 and make the semifinals. There's an argument to be made they received a big boost from hosting.
