Favorite base posting/why?

Least favorite/why?

Not a military man myself but I’m always interested in perspectives on this aspect.

A friend of mine was in the Navy and his favorite port of call when they would stop to resupply and do what ever was Australia for the women

He also liked Singapore for same reasons.

(I dont think this counts as a base per say, just adding my 2 cents)

Best: Mtn Home Idaho for brotherhood due to being in a small town. Everyone was close and seemed like family. Plus Boise being a short drive away was nice.

Worst: Little Rock AFB due to the leadership of the base.

Another was Army and originally from Nicaragua/Miami. His favorite was Japan, least favorite was Korea.

Pensacola NAS. Apartment on the base was really close to the beach, it was about 6 hours from my hometown, and they made a damn good omelet for breakfast.

Favorite - Camp Halieah, Busan Korea - because beer and the indigenous population (mid 80's)

Least Fav - Ft Riley, KS - hunting and fishing were EXCELLENT, but the political climate made it unbearable (late 80's to early 90's)

Moment, presume you are Marine...what years did you recruit Ar-Kansas and where? I recruited southern Arkansas, arguably the hardest area in the South

See that’s interesting to me and my non military mind. It would seem, at first thought, that there would be plenty of men in south Arkansas that would join the Marines.

Worst - Moody AFB, GA (leadership in the office was the worst)

Best - Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ from '86 thru about '93 (after that it went downhill some) - great golf & bowling town, major university and long before the SJW bullshite

ETA: Fav TDY base was Lowry, CO (now closed) - women greatly outnumbered men in Aurora, CO so it was like shooting fish in a barrel

Not military myself, but a lot of my family and friends are active or former/retired military.

My cousin in Shreveport says he likes the AFB there but hates the city. The Marines all liked their bases. The Navy guys didn't much care for any of their bases. The ARMY guys all despised Fort Hood.

Some things I'm sure have changed for better or worse, as the time frames of service for the people I mentioned, span from post-WWII to present.

A buddy of mine was stationed in Bremerton, WA had all kinds of stores about Australian women loving Americans and rotating bars in SE Asia.

Bremerton was a cool town in the nineties before Seattle went all in on being progressive.

I didn't serve but my dad was in for 26 years.
Favorite for me was Ramstein AB (enjoyed Germany)
Least favorite was Zaragoza AB in Spain. Location sucked. Base was tiny. Local Spanish folks hated us being there.

Fav: Coronado Naval Amphibious Base (across bridge/bay from San Diego). The weather, beaches, proximity, yet seclusion from, San Diego. Coronado is a charming island on its own. Though the base is best known for hosting SEALS BUDS, many people don’t know that is also home to USMC’s (west coast) Reconnaissance School, which was why I was there.

Also did my SERE school in Brunswick, ME. Beautiful area up there and it was by far the best military school I attended. Fun fact—I was there during the Red Sox/Yankees World Series where the Sox came back from 0-3. Got to watch all the games at a Red Sox bar with a bunch of the locals—was pretty cool.

Spent some time on Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, working with some marine reservists. If you don’t know, it’s a medical base and all the Army medics do their training their. I was a good Christian kid, so I didn’t take part, but let me tell you that the other handful of Marines their had an endless buffet of young, horny medic chicks at their disposal.

Least fav (most miserable)—29 Palms for CAX work ups. Depressing wasteland of a place. Hot as balls in the day and freezing at night. It’s only saving grace was it’s about 2hrs to both LA and Vegas—if you could get your command to give you any Libo.

...I will say, I actually liked being a deployed Marine (3 tours in western Iraq) than being a garrison Marine. Hated the inspection-ready, clean-shaven lifestyle. Preferred living out of a humvee with the boys.

Favorite...North Island NAS. San Diego is the closest thing to paradise in the US

Least favorite...Brunswick NAS in Maine. It's closed now. Hawaii gets a nod as well.

Overseas, Naples may be the best OCONUS assignment in the Navy.

I've heard that Lemoore and Fallon are real shitholes

FAV-GTMO-the Navy's best keep duty station secret. The Pearl of the Antilles. 95 degrees 365/7 and you never sweat because of tradewinds on an island. Beaches, partying with security, divers, SEALs, going to the naturally formed hot tub, buying Capt Morgan's/Crown Royal dirt cheap at the Marine Exchange.

LEAST FAV-Recruiting hometown USA twilight duty-- with a quota- causes more divorces then hot spot constant deployments.

Dallas NAS when it was open and driving to Carswell AFbase for all medical issues.

My kid who is in the Air Force did her training their after basic. She graduated before the shooting. I got the drive down to visit her. The base is very nice but I thought Pensacola way a dump of a beach town.

For me, when I served, the Air Force Academy was my favorite posting. Lovely area, great facilities.
