I need to know more. It says there's already a list of crimes that you can be charged as an adult for. So what is the supposed benefit of this new Amendment? Are there crimes not currently on the list that we wish were? If so what are they

It would have removed the specific crimes and allowed the legislature to designate specific crimes by statute instead of being tied to to list in the state constitution.

This discussion is ridiculous. Truly amazing.

Generally they would elevate to adult court for rape and murder.

But let’s say you did a home invasion with guns and didnt kill anyone. That sort of thing wouldn’t. So you’d be eligible for release at 21 if charged as a juvenile for some of these crimes.

The only negative I see is the drug crimes. What I wouldn’t want is ruining some kids life over him taking some pills or smoking weed. You can rehabilitate from substance abuse.

Now if they are out committing murder and armed robbery, that’s different.

Really compelling argument. I can totally see how you thoughtfully Drew your conclusion that just so happens to be the talking point of Temu Trump. Really coincidental!

So a 15 year old that murders 4 year old in cold blood deserves different treatment?

Well murder isn’t the only thing the legislature would be able to change procedures on. I really don’t want a legislature that bends over backward for the Louisiana Sheirffs Assc to be able to put my 15 year old away for 20 years if some whore decides she was raped instead of consented. I live in a policed State here in Franklinton where we spend 3.5 million a year on police and fire services, plus a sheriffs office. The local chief runs a look at me Facebook page and he’d love nothing more than to post how he put a young “sex predator” in jail.

This was an open invite for the legislature to add more crimes to that list.

Or bail a big donor’s kid out of a hot spot and send it to juvenile the courts.

Me

I may be wrong but the way I read it they would remove the list & start over
Starting over would require 2/3 vote

I’d rather at least have 16 things they could be tried for, I don’t trust that they would vote in more than 16 crimes

ETA

None of this matters until DA’s & judges do their jobs

They need to quite filling these amendments with so much BS. Voters (especially Louisiana voters) need shite to be simple. Start writing these things in a way that most people in this state can comprehend and maybe some things will get passed.

The report, Race and Wrongful Convictions in the United States 2022, reviewed the cases of 3,200 innocent defendants exonerated in the U.S. since 1989 and found that Black Americans are seven times more likely than white Americans to be falsely convicted of serious crimes. This is true across all major crime categories except for white collar crime, the report said.

What sources do you have that informed your claim that blacks are shown leniency?

Do you have a source for this? I haven't been able to find anything that backs this up. The 17 year old had a prior charge for car jacking that was ultimately dropped but the 15 year old girls didn't have any prior arrests as far as I know.

What those kids did was horrific and they earned their sentences regardless of what they did or didn't do prior to that day.

Yes, But that doesn't answer my question.

Are there things missing on the current list that we want the legislature to add??

I plead ignorance here but aren't these two already on the current list?

I guess my point is. Sure. If there are crimes the current constitution is overlooking that the Amendment would have facilitated adding, then, cool.

Otherwise, what's the point?

Why would a lipstick on a pig convince anyone it was a dog? Dogs don't wear lipstick.

Wrong question. Do you want to vote on a constitutional amendment to address this every time a new heinous crime you haven't considered pops up?

Have their been a rash of new crimes heretofore uninvented?

Perhaps I have no imagination but sitting here right now, I can't think of a single even POTENTIAL crime that I would want on the list that I imagine isn't already on it.

We may have 50 flavors of murder, but they're all murder.

Bingo. Legislators want to pawn off responsibilities for their votes on the voter and then when things go bad with the policy, they can throw up their hands and point back saying.....it's in the Constitution, remember, you voted for it.

OK then. Do you want to vote on a constitutional amendment every time you want to remove a crime from this list?

There's no good way to slice it. This is stupid.
