Imo a big part of it has been the decline of church attendance in the United States. Way too many people now are finding religiosity in politics instead of actually going to church.

In all honesty, you probably can draw a correlation to the decline in faith and consistent attendance in church and the community it creates and the polarization of politics. Religion may be a big tribe, but it does overcome politically ideological tribes and tribes of race.

A big part of this is that the right chose church as one of its primary institutions to invest in, which led to disassociation by leftists in time. The right choose poorly in terms of societal-political impact.
The Left has shown the media, academia, etc. were much smarter institutions to invest in, socio-politically.

Biden's administration has been about as terrible as anyone could have imagined. He's not even that popular among democrats. And he's STILL trouncing Trump in head to head polls right now. To be losing to Biden in polls you have to be very disliked by the general public.
