Why the big push for Data Centers?

Not sure if this right board for this.. But why the big push for all these data centers being built? I’ve read where this will be where they will roll out Social Credits, increased monitoring of civilians, and a one world currency. I’ve also been reading on the locals fighting against these because of the water consumption. I’m not trying to be a conspiracy theorist, just don’t understand why the US is pushing so hard for these

This is where the push against data centers is coming.
But everyone is trying the get the “first” into the market to get the market share and we are likely over building because of it.

I’ve read that too. But what exactly are we competing against China for when it comes to AI in our everyday lives. I can understand the push for AI in our military to stay competitive with other countries. But installing cameras on roadways such as Flock, is a total violation of privacy (if such thing exists anymore)

I’m kinda like you, B, as I don’t understand the difference between AI and AGI. Though I think the latter is a lot more powerful. And Power is what the whole thing is about. And I don’t think that the people pushing this are sure about anything other than their intentions re the societal good that is possible. Military applications seem to be ignored.

PS: watching a piece on FNC right now about “AI For Your Dogs”. Jumping around the Vets.

Because they are the future infrastructure for Prison camps.

The main reason they’re in the headlines is because of foreign money being dumped into negative coverage, one would normally have to think why is that. Will they or can they be used against the population, certainly, but with the ever growing usage of AI and the likes it takes these data complexes to make it possible. While still in its infancy it is the energy that drives the issues now. I’m not so sure building these mini nuclear plants is the right way to go about as it seems to be a security issue, I think larger scale plants could be secured better. I won’t be around for mature versions but I don’t think Skynet is the issue but rather countries

People who are frankly way too stupid to be commenting on it are spreading BS pushed by China on Facebook and elsewhere.
Data centers can run on closed loop water systems. I've seen firsthand that some use about the same amount of water in a year as 5 regular households. That kind of water usage is an error that an average water company wouldn't even notice if they went out and hooked up to the water system and stole water.
As for power they just need to be put in places with grids that can handle them, and they generally are.

This has been a thing long before AI. Don't conflate Flock and over-surveillance with AI

Data centers are needed to run your Apps and AI.

However, a recent hit and run driver was identified and arrested due to a flock camera that had taken an image of the driver in the driver's seat less than two minutes before the hit and run that killed a local man. Some good can be served, so it's useful for that purpose, in spite of the privacy fears

Long term AI will impact everything- manufacturing, healthcare care, etc. AI will likely increase productivity and lower costs in many of those areas, and companies will turn to the models that give them the best return. If China has the best and cheapest models, companies will turn to those, just like they did with manufacturing 30 years ago. If China controls those models, they can steal information and probably even disrupt things in the event of a conflict.

I think a lot of people don't fully understand the purpose of the massive data centers being built today. These facilities aren't just supporting big tech companies. They provide the computing power and infrastructure that thousands of businesses rely on every day, making it possible for startups and established companies alike to build, grow, and scale without owning their own data centers.
The growth of hyperscale data centers has fundamentally changed how businesses operate. Companies like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud are investing billions of dollars to build massive data centers around the world.
Instead of building and maintaining their own data centers, businesses can subscribe to cloud infrastructure and pay only for the computing resources they use. This eliminates the need for massive upfront investments in land, buildings, servers, networking equipment, cooling systems, backup power, and cybersecurity, making it much easier for startups to launch and for growing businesses to scale. At the same time, this recurring subscription model supports thousands of people in the IT industry.
It also improves reliability by replicating data and applications across multiple data centers, ensuring businesses can continue operating even if one region experiences a network outage or other disruption.
As demand for cloud services continues to grow, these hyperscalers continue expanding their infrastructure, creating jobs in construction, engineering, networking, operations, maintenance, manufacturing, and the many industries that support these facilities.

LSU Grad Alabama Fan you beat me to it.
One use of data centers....
Years ago companies started making the move away from laptops and desktops having advanced and expensive software and hardware loaded on them, and began renting the computer power and advanced programs from Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google, and others. Piping designer would need, use certain programs for the duration of a project and Amazon would provide and bill. Company didn't have to invest in the advanced 3D stuff, just rent from AWS. Also the same for accounting, Engineering, etc. Rent as needed and no additional IT expense on local machines other than to access AWS from work or home. Easy to upgrade or downgrade anytime since AWS would provide.
That's one reason.
I asked browser, "do data centers hold programs that businesses can rent?"
Response,
Yes, data centers host programs and infrastructure that businesses can rent through several distinct service models.
Cloud Computing: Businesses rent virtualized servers, storage, and software over the internet from providers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, paying only for the resources they use.
Colocation: Companies rent physical space, such as a rack or cabinet, within a third-party data center to house their own servers, benefiting from the facility’s power, cooling, and security.
Managed Hosting: Third-party providers offer physical space and actively manage and maintain the servers and infrastructure on behalf of the client.
These models allow businesses to access high-performance computing without the capital expense of building and maintaining their own facilities.

It's called progress. You can still be a good conservative and embrace real progress.

Any MEs want to address this nonsense?
I have in past post, but I'm to fatigued. The nonsense is wearing me out. Sigh.
Hint, Cooling Towers MUW and Blow Down needs.

Let's just be happy he didn't talk about 5G

Best explanation I’ve read. But I also know things that are intended to be for the greater good of everyone, gets in the wrong hands and used against us.
I’ll be honest, I’m just a man who’s not big on change. And AI is gonna be the biggest change of my life time. Here’s to hoping it ends up for the greater good of everyone!
