We are no longer in control. The "super organism" is. No one can stop what is coming.

Seriously, $$ and national security are all good reasons, but what if AI is already in control?

Thought it sounded weird too.

Gotta be a boomer. No Gen X I know, knows nothing about it AND gives af about the data center madness one way or the other.

Best explanation I’ve read.

I copied and pasted it from a thread I started on OT that was anchored for some reason.

There will be both benefits and drawbacks to AI, just as there have been with most technologies. The Internet is a good example.

I’ve read enough of your posts over the years to know you’re the biggest douche on this site. I just choose not to voice my opinion. Go EAD

They’re competing against China for superintelligence. Whoever builds superintelligence first controls the world (or destroys it).

about. And I don’t think that the people pushing this are sure about anything other than their intentions re the societal good that is possible

There doesn’t seem to be much social good considered at all, though. Not that I’m aware of, at least.

Too tired to type, too tired to use proper grammar, but knows about ongoing water needs of a data center

For one, you can use potable reclaimed water that no one wants to drink anyway for this.

Secondly you're likely thinking of an initial high usage of water to establish the closed loop (or maybe you're really dumb and counting the water used in construction, which no one with any sense should do since construction uses a lot of water no matter what it is with builidngs that large).

here's why I'm tired. I spent ovver 30 years of my career designing and building microelectronics plant and data farms. design and builds for greenfield and brown field for companies like Intel, Samsung, Texas Instruments, TSMC, Global Foundries, IBM, etc. I first gowned up to go into a microelectronics production facility in 1988. I'm done, tired, and finally retired.
Have you designed or built any of these types of plants?
I'll hang up and listen.

So you aren't and haven't been building the modern data centers with closed loop systems? If any of the rest is true.

I'll hang up and listen.

A simple example but Im sure its been replicated 1000s of times with the advent of accessible computing power.

Ive studied spanish for years and my wife subscribed me to LanguaAI. This program uses voice recognition but it doesnt just translate. It corrects you, and explains why and gives examples. You can ask any question and it will explain it. You can have conversations about anything, interspersing with english if you dont know the spanish word and it "understands".

Heck, it asked me to translate "he doesnt pay attention to me". I responded with a colloquial expression similar to "he doesnt take me on". The program responds "Trinidad, outstanding you sound like a real Mexican".

It obviously takes a lot of computing power for this program and in the space of a couple of years this company has 25K subscribers. This would have cost an astronomical amount of capital to ramp up, instead they just rent as they grow.

A lot of good can come from AI and the propaganda China is spreading through NGOs is just that propaganda to hope the government strangles the development the way they are in Europe.

is 3 year obsolete? They're the same shite anyway other than the scale. Heat transfer, air movement, power consumption and Telecomm are the main obstacles for Data Centers. Add Process Specific Support Systems, Massive water and wastewater support, distribution, and waste treatment for Microelectronics production.
You may read something on the net, but you really don't know what you're talking about.

On the water issue it doesn't matter. Louisiana has plenty of water and no one has ever batted an eye before about a papermill or other plant's water usage. Some people are just afraid of big numbers.

I have seen plants built smack dab in the middle of a desert with a company town nearby for workers, all because there was an unused aquifer in the valley.

Capitalism…it’s not the US pushing for them; it’s supply and demand. There is a huge demand for them and not enough of them. They require significantly less water to operate than farms and they have been around for decades so it’s nothing “new” and scary. Hope that helps

all the "falling behind chyna" is propaganda imo. EV investment money dried up. So now it's AI for it. Trump's family in on the push too.

I don't care as much about electricity and water as new tech can solve that, but my concern is farm land being swallowed up causing high real estate prices. Not good right now when many are disillusioned on being able to afford fulfilling a dream.

But more dangerously...what kind of data is filling these things up??? We are now seeing cameras everywhere. Recording every min of our day. Flock Cameras going up, cars with a bunch of live cameras on them, collecting data. We are being turned into Chyna by people who are gaslighting us about "falling behind chyna."

I think a lot of people don't fully understand the purpose of the massive data centers being built today. These facilities aren't just supporting big tech companies. They provide the computing power and infrastructure that thousands of businesses rely on every day, making it possible for startups and established companies alike to build, grow, and scale without owning their own data centers.

The growth of hyperscale data centers has fundamentally changed how businesses operate. Companies like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud are investing billions of dollars to build massive data centers around the world.

Instead of building and maintaining their own data centers, businesses can subscribe to cloud infrastructure and pay only for the computing resources they use. This eliminates the need for massive upfront investments in land, buildings, servers, networking equipment, cooling systems, backup power, and cybersecurity, making it much easier for startups to launch and for growing businesses to scale. At the same time, this recurring subscription model supports thousands of people in the IT industry.

It also improves reliability by replicating data and applications across multiple data centers, ensuring businesses can continue operating even if one region experiences a network outage or other disruption.

As demand for cloud services continues to grow, these hyperscalers continue expanding their infrastructure, creating jobs in construction, engineering, networking, operations, maintenance, manufacturing, and the many industries that support these facilities.

Because you’re on the internet right now. The “cloud” IS data centers.
