The US is pushing for them bc tech donors need them to maintain their oligarchy and obtain complete control of every aspect of our lives.
The government is a stupid but unwitting participant in this.
Once the private infrastructure is built the surveillance state can use shite like FISA warrants or just say we voluntary waived our privacy interests - and the selected stooges / clients of the tech oligarchs who are elected by fake elections funded by said oligarchs - will just co-opt the data.
To me the electricity/ water needed to run them are just an ironic side effect whereby we fund our own destruction

You may read something on the net, but you really don't know what you're talking about.
I've seen the water usage numbers first hand after the initial establishment phase where they do use quite a bit of water, actually, and the ongoing usage isn't bad at all

Try looking up paper mill water usage numbers, they are larger. We've closed a lot of papermills in LA over the last 3 decades due drop in demand.
Lake Chuck area has a 35 mile canal from the Sabine River with 200 million gallons per day to SUPPLEMENT water pumped from local water wells at chemical plants and refineries.

Wrong. R&D scientists as well as business development execs use it daily as it speeds up their research drastically. This is why Chevron is buying into a data center in Texas. I know several who use AI and it drastically increases their efficiency.

I should have clarified more in my original comment and edited it for clarity, I was basically saying the initial phase has high water usage but ongoing usage at these data centers really isn't bad. Its fear mongering.

the push is directly from AI. DC growth rate was reasonable compared to after the AI explosion.
It isn't just a water issue either. Power and power quality as a HUGE deal.

Isn't bad? it is still hundreds of thousands of gallons per facility and we are building thousands of facilities. And when it is old enough for routine maintenance and repairs, there are many large spikes.
This is a REAL infrastructure issue. How do I know? Because I engineer data centers and we see the issues first hand doing design and site evaluations every day. Can solutions be engineered? Over time, probably.
The fear isn't being pushed/funded by china. The fear is because study after study of areas where many data centers get built result in the same situation. Residential electricity and water prices skyrocket. That is where the fear is coming from.

Fully aware. Just explained that to my wife, who did not understand the flip side of the equation. She said to me, "if you aren't breaking the law then you have nothing to fear." So I asked her, "would you be okay with yourself, our daughter or our son being stopped by the police, arrested and laying on the ground, thrown in jail or worse, some trigger happy cop pops off or the police show up at our home with a warrant to search our home because the AI powering the search incorrectly identified one of our license plate numbers or one of us were driving through close to a crime scene area and the type of car and color we're driving was similar to the one used by an assailant?

Massive data centers and cameras everywhere plus AI is eventually the end game for freedom. Look at the evil idiots trying to gain control of our government right now and the recent Open AI rogue AI agent gaining access to the Internet and hacking into another AI application on it's own. It's only a mstter of time for evil doers or autonomous AI agents to do things that are very bad to anyone in their way that think differently than they do. They will be able to easily identify and locate anyone who is against them.

Data centers can run on closed loop water systems. I've seen firsthand that some use about the same amount of water in a year as 5 regular households. That kind of water usage is an error that an average water company wouldn't even notice if they went out and hooked up to the water system and stole water.
As for power they just need to be put in places with grids that can handle them, and they generally are.

The fear mongering of the Karens has been off the charts. People don't even realize they're being manipulated or why.
This is the most important project human beings have ever worked on. Not hyperbole there. This is about the future of the species and whether it's going to be one that recognizes individual freedom and liberty or if it will be one trained up on the morality of Mao and communism.
That's not something we can slouch our way through. China isn't.
