That said the Cajuns were entrenched in the area well before the "Americans" forced English upon them. I don't think the plight of the Cajuns is a fair comparison to immigrants or illegal aliens learning the language of the country they are entering.

Alright, how about Italians in the northeast around the turn of the century? Italian was quite common in NYC, Chicago, Boston, etc. in the early 1900s. They brought over all manner of tradition and even some good old corruption. Assimilation took a while. The Italian language persisted for like a century.

What percentage of the population do you think is regularly working with English Ship Captains or Merchants? I guarantee you it isn't 90%

What percentage of Scandinavians are exposed to English in their publicly funded schools?

That's why Northern Europeans learn English at the astonishingly high rates that they do. They want to partake in the larger culture of the anglosphere, the music, tv, books, movies, etc. It's amalgamating in to one single culture.

And all of that is due to wealth and education. Someone with two weeks of dirt caked on their body, searching for their next meal or job, doesn't care about Justin Beieber or Harry Potter or secondary education.

As someone else pointed out, it takes time. It's common to have 1st generation immigrants that can't speak the native language. But it's progressive and each generation is more assimilated then the last. That's anecdotal so don't ask for data. And the analogy to the Acadians is spot on.

I have been internet friends with a good bit of Swedes/Norwegians/Danes, and they all tell me it's strictly taught and held to a high standard to learn english. Most of them talk with little accent also.

People also forget the UK's proximity to places like Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands....they are very close and the English have been a major influence in W. Europe for hundreds of years

Well I dont think that applies in France. Honestly, the French are so averse to English given the proximity its absurd.

Its not proximity. Its willingness to make your citizens adaptable. These Latino countries choose to be insular YET they send millions of illegals over here. Disgusting hypocrisy

Interestingly most Mexicans in Mexico who come into contact with Americans in their jobs speak English really well as opposed to many of Mexican descent who are third generation Americans and still can't speak English.

If they weren't handed everything in Spanish I suspect they would be a bit more likely to learn English.

It's fun to watch Europeans from different countries meet someplace in Europe and default to English.

Europeans are taught multiple languages in public schools. Most graduate high school knowing their native language, English, and at least one of either French, Russian, Spanish, German, or Italian.

Just like Americans, Mexicans aren't taught to be bilingual in schools unless the other language is an indigenous tribal language.

look how far away(Scandinavians) are from America while Mexico claims to be our neighbor.
Well, Norway IS only 300 miles from the nearest Scottish territory.

dont understand why if you are going to send over illegals more of them can't speak English. Surely, it would make their lives easier.

On the other hand, a good majority of Northern Europeans speak perfect English with no intention whatsoever of illegally or legally immigrating for that matter.

What gives?

Most Mexicans speak at least a few words. Quite a few of them speak some degree of English. If you go to the tourist areas, they all speak English.

It’s not laziness unless you want to say every American who isn’t bilingual is lazy too. It’s simply that in their day to day lives, they don’t have much use for it.

In America, most of them start to learn, but learning a new language is HARD. I wouldn’t be so quick to criticize.

Spanish is an easy language while English is difficult to learn. Couple that with generally poor education in central American countries = no comprendo.

Yet some here are comparing the public school system in Nuevo León to fricking Sweden......

And Leon is one of the modern areas.

What it boils down to is shortsighted-ignorance of how the world works. Notice I stopped short of calling some bigots here. Benefit of the doubt.

My ex was from Ukraine and she did not know a lick of English. She learned it from tv and spoke it very well. While we were dating she was doing a report for class on immigration. One of the immigrants profiled was from Mexico, was here for 10 years, did not know any English. She was pretty direct in her report about that being ridiculous. She ended up getting a D. As the professor was discussing the reports in class she stood up and tells everyone she came over in an arranged marriage and learned English on her own. How are you going to give her a D on a paper when she actually lived the life they were trying to learn about. She got the grade changed to an A

Bet they didn't wave Swedish Flags or fly them in their yard here in America either. They were right to stay proud of their history but also right to embrace their new home!
