English is the language of international business so more developed countries have a higher English speaking population. The three countries you listed are also some of the most socialistic in the entire world so education level among citizens is more uniform. Mexico is neither of those things. Now, once they're here legally is a different story...somewhat.

Liberals are right in saying that we are a nation of immigrants but the similarities end with that label and that label alone. Immigrants from older generations wanted to fit in to American life, become it, and be shaped by it. A significantly smaller percentage of modern day immigrants share that mindset.

It's pretty funny that you're posting on a Louisiana-based forum and making an argument that other immigrant groups willingly assimilated into American culture. The resistance to American cultural norms is on full display in South Louisiana.

My grandfather was born in the US, speaks fluent Cajun French and broken English. And only because the government forced it on him. Our laws are based on the napoleonic code. And on and on

Excellent post. Cajun French speakers were forced to speak English and beaten at school if they spoke Cajun French instead of English in Louisiana at one time.

Assuming what you even say is true, which I would need to see actual data to support it, education is the obvious answer here.

Most Europeans are taught English in school at a very young age. Most Europeans actually finish school because they are in developed countries. And on top of that, English is the international business language. Many will need to know the language to have a good profession.

Expecting the same from people from underdeveloped countries is silly IMO.

Education. It's the official language of 50+ countries, so it's beneficial on a global business scale.

For what, 200 years? Let's give them another 800 years to assimilate like Europe.

My grandparents both told very specific stories of being beaten and even forced to urinate on themselves in class because they could not ask to go to the bathroom in English.

That said the Cajuns were entrenched in the area well before the "Americans" forced English upon them. I don't think the plight of the Cajuns is a fair comparison to immigrants or illegal aliens learning the language of the country they are entering.

I'm no expert on residents of South Louisiana but my understanding is that they were removed from Acadia/NS after the Brits won that part of Canada? They're a bit different than other cohorts of immigrants. Their movement was less voluntary was it not?

You either have to assume that Spanish speaking immigrants have no desire to learn English or are too stupid. Either answer is damning.

That and English is the language of business for Europe so a lot of Europeans pick that up as their second language since you are almost guaranteed to find someone who speaks English if you go somewhere else in Europe.

not to mention that no one speaks their language, especially dutch. And for the dutch at least, they are also a major international shipping hub. This means english is quite important.

the people coming to america from mexico are poor and seeking a better life. They probably lack higher education.

I have spent a fair amount of time in mexico and while I do speak some spanish, I really haven't had a problem using english pretty much everywhere.

What percentage of the population do you think is regularly working with English Ship Captains or Merchants? I guarantee you it isn't 90%. The average stevedore doesn't need to know any other language than Dutch. That answer is weak.

It's a desire to participate in culture, that's the answer. That's why Northern Europeans learn English at the astonishingly high rates that they do. They want to partake in the larger culture of the anglosphere, the music, tv, books, movies, etc. It's amalgamating in to one single culture.

The fact that recent immigrants are not doing that is rooted in their lack of desire to join that culture...our culture.
