I dont understand why if you are going to send over illegals more of them can't speak English. Surely, it would make their lives easier.

On the other hand, a good majority of Northern Europeans speak perfect English with no intention whatsoever of illegally or legally immigrating for that matter.

What gives?

Something the OP clearly lacks given his question.

Many Europeans speak multiple languages already. We would as well if each state, or cluster of states in the US spoke its own language.

That said, if you are moving into a country, you should learn the language. You will be much more successful. Not speaking the language guarantees a minimal existence.

And look how far away they are from America while Mexico claims to be our neighbor.

Given the proximity, I dont understand the policies of some of these Central American countries. Many Costa RIcans speak English but quite the opposite for their neighbors(Hondurans, Guametalans, etc)

I believe English is taught at most European schools, starting as early as elementary.

Almost 90% of Norwegians speak English fluently, Dutch are at similar rates. You can get around in Germany quite easily with no knowledge of German.

You either have to assume that Spanish speaking immigrants have no desire to learn English or are too stupid. Either answer is damning.

Being poor or uneducated is no excuse. My Grandmother keeps a Swedish-English dictionary, a family heirloom, that her grandparents studied intently on the boat ride over in the 1880s. They were poor farmers in Sweden and poor farmers here but they wanted to fit in.

Liberals are right in saying that we are a nation of immigrants but the similarities end with that label and that label alone. Immigrants from older generations wanted to fit in to American life, become it, and be shaped by it. A significantly smaller percentage of modern day immigrants share that mindset.

That and English is the language of business for Europe so a lot of Europeans pick that up as their second language since you are almost guaranteed to find someone who speaks English if you go somewhere else in Europe.

Those languages listed derive from Old Norse, which also contributed heavily to the English language during the Middle Ages, so I'm thinking it may have something to do with the linguistic distance between the two groups, and grammar, characteristic vowel/ consonant sounds, etc.

Just my guess, however it may be a completely wrong conjecture.

Go to Cancun. Basically everyone speaks English.

Go to Huehuetoca, many don't.

It's a product of their interaction with English speakers and their education.

I was in Switzerland last month, the west part of the country speaks French, the east German, the southern Italian. But they all speak English.

It also guarantees an isolated community, the better to appeal to tribalism.

It also guarantees government jobs for massive translation requirements

It also guarantees the need for "assistance' at all governmental interfaces, the better to guide them thru all the "game the system" hoops.

Victim status; if you don't speak English then you're obviously a refugee and need a lot of free shite.
