Would love to see he and RFK, Jr. team up and run 3rd party called the American Party.

Serious answer-
After the Clinton, Bush and Obama years, the Democratic Party was completely lined up for Hillary Clinton; and there was nobody in the Republican party.
Trump had always been an East Coast Democrat, with fairly liberal social views, and a strong focus on Capitalism. None of that changed when he ran, he simply entered the Republican party and did a good job articulating his points to the working class (the deplorables). He's not about smaller government, he's more about streamlining and efficiency, which is the capitalist model.
At this point, he has a power base established, so it makes little sense to change parties. He's not reliant on the party, so no reason to confuse potential voters. Nobody realistically sees a new party emerging to replace one of the Big 2, so for any chance to win, you have to be D or R. He is tied to the R.

Being the GOP nominee guarantees ballot access in every state.
If he goes third party, they will go full Obama and have enough signatures on his petitions disqualified to remove him from the ballot in key states.

Why is DeSantis running?
