He’s an old blue dog dem.

Coal country

Unions

He’s no more a modern dem than you and I.

If he votes for this abomination of a bill he’s done.

(Grandson of a WV coal miner)

If he were alive he would have voted for Trump and was a “dem” all his life due to unions.

WV was a Democrat stronghold until 2000.

When the Democrat Party shifted to the party of elites and began to shite on working class, blue collar, rural, and small town America, they lost WV.

WV is a perfect state encapsulation of what the Democrats used to be.

I imagine one reason is because the UMW union tells members who to vote for.

Exactly. Eons ago the Democratic party DID give two shits about this group, in 2021 it's practically an enemy.

I think he's holding on trying to convince himself his party hasn't left him. He's ripe to leave the caucus now. I don't know how he's restrained himself considering how brutally his party has treated him.

The question to that answer is: why did the Republicans nominate an unelectable right winger to run against him?

It wasn't too long ago that a lot of whites would vote Dem. in rural areas, including WV. Manchin is like a time capsule from the late 20th century. He has a similar agenda to the Democrats who won back then.

Every now and again you get some oddball candidates who win elections for a party that you didn't think had any support in an area. State governors are good examples. Democrat Gov. in KY, Democrat Gov. in LA, Democrat Gov in KS, Republican Gov. in MD, Republican Gov. in MA, Republican Gov. in VT, etc.

States tend to vote for senators like they do for presidential elections though, so you are right that Manchin is an oddball. If you look at a map of Senate representation it looks almost exactly like how the country voted in '20.

Keep in mind that is Robert "KKK" Byrd's old seat and was very much like Joe Biden of his generation. He got elected to the legislature in his 20s, Congress in his mid-30s and U.S. Senator from his early 40s until his death in his 90s, over 5 decades in the Senate alone. Robert Byrd was re-elected EIGHT times, carrying all 55 counties of the State on at least 2 occasions.

WV voted for Carter even in 1980. Dukakis carried the State by 5 points in 1988. They've voted Republicans for President consistently since 2000, but that hasn't cracked any support for a Dem in that seat. Like you said, Manchin keeps getting stronger. That seat, in particular has only had Republicans serve 4 1/2 terms (less than 30 years) since Reconstruction. :letthatsinkin:

The other seat, for whatever reason, is a little more balanced, but they also had 2 long-serving Dems roughly coinciding with Byrd that locked it up for about 60 years before the incumbent took it for the GOP.

Yeah sure get a loser that sits on the pot and can't even decide to take a shite or not. A career politician that provides nothing and takes everything. People can do better than this trash.

And to reinforce just how corrupt our system is and has been, as Byrd gained more and more power and influence over that time, he was bringing home to tiny WV roughly 1/3 of all Federal highway money during many budget cycles. There is no surprise just how many things are named after him in the State.
