Why Did Illegal Immigration Only Recently Become a Problem?

Mexico has always been to our south and has always been poor. However, back in the day illegal immigration from Mexico was extremely rare. Why have they only started coming across in recent decades? What were we doing "back in the day" to keep them out?

Illegals don't care about the law, so you can't blame it on the law changing. Where were all the illegals prior to, say, 1965? Why wasn't Texas or Arizona or California being overrun in the 30's or 40's or 50's for example? We didn't have a wall back then and, to my knowledge, didn't have the Army on the border either. Why is it that we had no problem keeping them out back then, but we do now?

If anyone has any data on illegal immigration going way back, I would like to see it. Almost all the data I can find starts in the 60's or 70's.

I dont think we were keeping them out then. People justhadnt figured out a way to benefit from the issue back then.

i don’t have any data, so this is purely a wild guess

i think it has just slowly but steadily gotten worse.

at one time the people crossing were (mostly) doing so legally. coming here to try to better themselves.

i’ve know several older generation hispanics who came over the right way and have even become citizens by going through the proper channels.

at some point though people figured out how to exploit it.
and it’s gotten out of hand since then.

The rise of the drug cartels in the 70s probably had a lot to do with it

Because it was easy to fire up the disaffected masses with the latest bogeyman. It’s politics
Pure and simple. It’s cynical as hell.

It became apparent to enough of them how advanced we were materially compared to them, and they more than ever wanted a piece. The end.

Curbing illegal immigration was one of Trump's biggest platforms when he ran.

The Dem's platform is to be adamantly against anything Trump is for, so there you go.

Mix between cartel violence increasing and insane back logs in getting here legally. A son or daughter over 21 of a US citizen from Mexico has a 20+ year wait time to get here legally. Simply easier to cross over, especially if you just want to work and not break any (other) laws.

I’m not positive, but free trade i.e. NAFTA might’ve hurt Mexican farmers.

Plus the drug wars. And plus the US gives free education and medical care to immigrants and their kids.
