Why did Bush lose in 92?

Was it really because of Ross Perot?

Ross Perot
No new taxes flub (that wasn't really his fault)

Perot did a lot of damage but Bush ran the most passive incumbent campaign ever, likely because he’d had 90% approval in 1991.

Perot was a factor, but ""Read my lips" did a whole lot more damage to Bush while simultaneously elevating Perot

Wasn't there a mild recession as well?

It skirted the definition of “recession” but was treated as major because it was the first time the economy had slowed since Reagan’s first term.

Because he literally didn’t campaign until it was too late. He was seen as a shoe in for a second term and got lazy. Bill Clinton became the nominee because no other Dem wanted to take on a guy who at one point had a 90 point approval rating. By the time he realized Billy was a serious threat plus the addition of Perot there was nothing he could do

Yes.
Clinton also got 3% in Iowa, lost NH, won only one state on Super Tuesday (GA), and didn't emerge as THE guy until late in the primary process.
I don't think Bush took him as seriously as he should have because of his approval rating and how little Clinton was known, and because of all of Clinton's possible scandals

Probably one of the first times the TV media realized they had influence over elections

It the economy stupid.
Yes Perot hurt him, yes “read my lips” hurt him, but the economy had slowed and the Fed wasn’t as political then as now.
Also, it turns out that country bumpkin governor from Arkansas was a damn good campaigner.

Can you explain why?
Posted on 2/2/24 at 11:21 am to tigahfan747
Why didnt the superior candidate, for the people, Perot win in 92? Because the ineffective Bush was too selfish to step a side and he had the backing of all the ruling class.

A lot of reasons most of which are mentioned below:
-mild recession
-"no new taxes" pledge
-He wasn't the most charismatic guy
-Bill, scandalous as he was, is very charismatic
Plus, it was essentially 12 years of the same administration. Fatigue sets in.
But at the end of the day, it was Ross Perot. Screw him.

It's the intro to Living Color's "Cult of Personality.
"No new Taxes! Read my lips! NO! NEW! TAXES!!"
Then the Democrats tricked him into a compromise on raising taxes.
Once the election came around, the Dems blasted him lying about "no new taxes" over and over and over.

In hindsight, Perot wouldve probably been better than every president between Reagan and Trump.

This!
He did not start really trying until just weeks before the election. He completely left bubba alone. It was crazy. I can only believe his handlers liked giving him bad advice.

Without a doubt. Did you see the amount of votes he got?
18.9% of the votes to Perot.
