She was struggling to get there but she was too much of a surface-thinker to get to that level. She's heard the rhetoric and thought on it no more than "yeah, that sounds good."
Had she gone that route though, the response is to point out that for the entirety of the English language, "gender" has been synonymous with "biological sex". The attempt to redefine the word didn't become popular until fairly recently with a lot of it ironically built on the failed experiment of John Money on David Reimer.
I say "ironically" because they use foundational philosophy of the experiment (attempting to prove that "gender" is a societal construct) as their core logic when they don't even know that the very experiment that sought to prove it failed so utterly that the subject, David Reimer, killed himself over it.
