Why are young people so obsessed with socialism?

Is it just because they want to rebel against facts? They just want to be disagreeable? They really believe a massive government state is the best thing for a utopian society?
WTF? I thought the hippies and free love crowd always hated the government in any form. Why after they throwing themselves willingly on the guillotine?
It scares the hell out of me that almost 50% of the population simply ignores facts or is happy being fed lies.

I think it's a myth they even know what socialism is. Same with their dumbass professors. It's sold as giving to the poor which is something almost all people acknowledge is a good thing.

They don’t have any money and a lifetime of work is ahead of them. They don’t want to work.

Because it's an easy concept to understand (as opposed to actually implement in a successful manner). A society of "everyone is equal" plays much easier than a society of "work for what you get". It's not until you start looking at the details where Socialism falls apart so utterly outside of a small, highly homogeneous society.
