Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee and unlike the South where the cities are out voted by the rest of the state there’s just enough white guilt in the culture to tip the scale in their favor.

Pretty much this.

The states aren't as leftist as election results indicate. ALL democrat cities have huge election fraud machines that generate votes out of thin air. If the US ever eliminates voter fraud, democrats will never win another national election and their margins in local elections will shrink and might disappear entirely.

But there are A LOT of Catholics in the midwestern cities. It's not as dominant of a religion as it is in south Louisiana, coastal Maryland, or south Texas

Look at a MN electoral map. The blue is MSP, Rochester, Winona, Duluth, and Mankato--all big cities or college towns. The rest is red. Of course, as my grandfather used to say, land doesn't vote--people do.

A lot of it has to do with being the old rust belt and the power of unions.

The rural areas are traditionally different from the urban areas. I worked with a guy from Michigan years ago and he was country as a biscuit.

I would assume there are a lot of Union members up there. At least there used to be.

Funny, I never saw any American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signs on road construction in the South, but they were all over Ohio and Illinois. Indiana gets 3x (per capita) as much as Louisiana gets, and 2x Ohio. Nearly 4% of Minnesota's budget comes from FedGov.

I always wonder about this data. Florida gets a ton of Medicare and Social Security money because of all the retirees moving there. Should that count against them? Also, Virginia has the largest Naval Base in the world and a huge military presence. The big Aircraft Carriers are built in Newport News. That money doesn’t impact the average Virginian unless they work at the shipyard.

GreatLakesTiger is one of the dumbest posters on this site. Utterly clueless. He's never been right about anything, regardless of the subject.

I can't stress this enough. These people are fricking weird - possibly the weirdest population group in this country.

Haven't met many Scandinavians, but I'd bet these Utah Mormons could give 'em a run for their money.

Catholic is a religion.

Christianity is just a group that likes to associate with the Catholic Church for whatever reason that is. They turned heel. They have their King we have ours.

MN, despite the fraud, contributes. Louisiana is a drain.

And it was covered in a thread yesterday, but hunting is bigger in the Midwest than the south

quote:

Based on 2024 data, U.S. states' dependency on federal dollars is measured by the ratio of federal spending received per dollar of federal taxes paid (often called "return on tax dollars"). This metric accounts for both contributions (taxes paid) and receipts (federal expenditures back to the state), with ratios above $1.00 indicating net recipients and below $1.00 indicating net contributors.

Here is the full ranked list of all 50 states from highest to lowest dependency:

1. New Mexico: $3.42 received per $1 paid
2. West Virginia: $2.91 received per $1 paid
3. Alaska: $2.65 received per $1 paid
4. Mississippi: $2.66 received per $1 paid
