Who's the smartest politician from Louisiana you've ever met?

Even though I didn't like him as Governor I talked to Bobby Jindal yesterday at a steakhouse and he came off as extremely intelligent to me.

Easy to do in a brief, one-time encounter in a casual setting.

No one ever doubted that Jindal was an intelligent man. Just made some questionable choices down the stretch.

Was it at Flemings in Baton Rouge? I've seen him eating with his family there twice in the past.

Bobby Jindal and Mike Johnson are pretty smart fellows.

Edwin Edwards. One of the nicest men I've ever met, too. Never voted for him though.

No one alive can have met HPL and remembered anything of it

Late 1991. Was picking up my parents at BTR airport. It was fairly late and a few delayed flights were trickling in. I think I was standing in that same hallway where the guy shot the pedo, when Buddy Roemer (who had just lost to Edwards and Duke in the primary) comes walking down the hall all by himself with his duffle bag. Greets me, shakes my hand, then keeps walking on to get his bags. Couldn’t believe he was all alone like that, as he was still the sitting governor.

Define smart. Intellectually or politically. Because on the surface intellectually it was David Vitter. Very smart guy Harvard educated Rhodes scholar but in terms of dealing with thing politically not so intelligent. Nice enough guy though .
Politically, Beyond Scalise, Edwin Edwards was probably the most savvy politicians this state has ever had since Huey Long. He knew how to play the games and knew how to leverage things to his benefit. The one thing he had that few politicians did not have was a personal touch. If you called his office, you would get a phone call back from him either that day or before noon the next fro him personally. He also could disarm his detractors in person. Scalise has a lot of those same qualities.
Honorable mention from waaaay back.....BB "Sixty" Rayburn. The good ole baw image covered up a shrewd mind that understood a lot of issues ......and he was plain spoken and could get away saying things directly that other politicians would be too afraid to.

The man definitely knew how to work a room.
My whole family was having lunch at TJ Ribs one Friday and he just walked up and sat down right at the table with us. This was shortly after he’d lost his congressional race.
