Whether or not Trump is a megalomaniac, it's advantageous to appear to be one.

With the world's largest military under his unrestrained control, President Trump has said the quiet part out loud: international law, treaties, and/or alliances do not restrain the United States from doing what Trump thinks is right.
Add to that the real possibility that Trump is a megalomaniac, and the US retains a vastly superior negotiating position compared to the rest of the world.
In a letter to the Prime Minister of Norway, Trump said he no longer has to act with peace as the ultimate goal because "Norway" snubbed him regarding the Nobel Peace Prize. Aside from being inaccurate (the country of Norway doesn't decide or present the award), imagine the confusion that puts the Europeans in: "Wait...he might commit his nation to war because his personal feelings were hurt?"
Our magnificent Orange genuis. The drop of pretense is also a refreshing change from previous Presidents. "We don't need you. You need us. We aren't investing in Greenland as tenants."
Here's AP's repording:
Trump ties stance to Nobel Prize
According to two European officials, Trump’s message to Gahr Støre read in part: “Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.” .....
He appeared to blame allies for his cataclysmic shift in foreign policy, arguing that because Norway did not give him the Nobel Peace Prize last year, he could now put US interests first. .....
“Norway’s position on Greenland is clear. Greenland is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Norway fully supports the Kingdom of Denmark on this matter,” Støre said. “As regards the Nobel Peace Prize, I have clearly explained, including to president Trump what is well known, the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee and not the Norwegian Government.”

Trump links policy to Nobel snub
Dear Jonas:
Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.
Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a “right of ownership” anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also.
i have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.
Thank you! President DJT

If the US was not there, the Russians could take it in 2 hours or less.

One of the funniest bits of parenting advice I ever received was to never let your kids doubt you might just have a little bit of crazy in you.
Having the upper hand naturally and being perceived as unpredictable is a pretty decent advantage in leverage.

Remember, they loved him or pretended they did when they thought he was harmless & out of the way.
Then he ran. They still mocked, laughed & said he was just larping, to get his media company started up. He was never serious.
When they saw , too late, that he was then we heard he’s a megalomaniac, and doesn’t care for you! He’s playing his voters for fools.
The Left always project their own faults.

The mouth breathers don't see this for what it is. Of course he is behaving this way for the sake of negotiation. They see it as if he is just being crazy.
Weird how that craziness seems to just walk into win after win.

Trump is trolling the world.
I think he is actually a nice guy. He does so many nice things for people we don't know about.
But he needs to protect an image of a sort of losoe cannon. It's beneficial for negotiations with other people.

Parallels to the “madman foreign” policy under Nixon??

I'm certain that you cheered on Obama when he took a similar stance.
This "team" politics bullshite will be the death of us yet.

Serious as a heart attack. Has ANY President ever refrained from a particular act of foreign policy because of international sentiment?
I appreciate it when the President says the truth rather than making up reasons that sound noble.

You appreciate him damaging our international relations just because he’s “speaking his mind”?

Personally, I lean towards thinking he is, but obviously I don't know him. He's definitely a showman and an accomplished negotiator.
I have learned to never assume that I know WHY President Trump says something. Is it the truth? Is it staking an extreme for negotiating purposes?
Is it purposeful misdirection?

Decatur prefers progressive POS president muppets with dementia.

You just said you didn’t vote for Trump so how are you different?

I believe in realpolitik. International relations are governed only by power. The President's only obligation is to the people of the United States. I appreciate candor about why the President is doing something so that Americans can decide whether or not they approve. Then, they can express their pleasure or displeasure:
-through their representatives in Congress (cutting or expanding funding) and
-at the ballot box
We don't need permanent alliances. Coalitions can be formed for issues where there are shared interests. In every issue I can think about, the US is more valuable to our potential partners than vice versa.
The only vulnerability I see is the loss of the dominace of the dollar as the world's trading currency. We seem to be handling that through gun boat diplomacy.
