Maybe it was successful in detering Soviet aggression, but Article V has only been invoked once---after 9/11, and I wouldn't judge that a success.

Which of these former Warsaw Pact countries would we have problems with getting their co-operation even without NATO?

Are they selling? It doesn’t sound like they are.

We have a presence there already. Russia and China aren’t invading nor have they threatened to do so. We basically have every nation on earth surrounded physically and keep a watchful eye from space. We already have the ability to destroy the world, as do they.

As in most cases though, governments usually want what is in the ground more than the actual ground itself. As to your question, my opinion is no but that opinion doesn’t matter. That was my original point. Our government does what it wants to when it wants to, and the citizenry will pay for it by threat of fine, imprisonment, or death.

How are our NATO allies coming to our defense not exactly what is intended by the whole thing?

You make it seem like we can toss NATO and still maintain readiness, intel sharing, etc. You know there will be an impact and it would be an own-goal. But it’s all cool because Donny is out there telling everyone how it is.

You forgot one key point: they absolutely must have a “D” behind their name.

I gave the wrong impression. I don't know enough to have a strong opinion. I think the pros and cons of continued NATO memberships should be discussed if we ever have that need. Obviously, the Red Army rolling through West Germany isn't a threat anymore.

Practically, I don't think we're near that point. There isn't a mechanism to expel members of NATO. To withdraw from the treaty, I think member states have to give a year's notice.

I’ve been a member of the Democratic Party since I could first register to vote and usually do vote for them.

I’ve also voted for Republicans in local, state and federal elections.

Now put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Trump is confused and doesn’t know the difference between Denmark and Norway.

Perhaps he's a student of history and is harkening back to the days when Denmark and Norway were united under a single monarch from 1380 through 1814.

Guidance Counselor once commented about my Step Son. “He fears you!”

I commented back “The day he loses fear in me is the day I’ve lost all control.”

That’s the element of a little crazy, they can’t grasp.
