Did Trump ever explain why they should pay? If not, why were people like “yeah! They should pay for it!”

Because the people who love Trump love the fact that he says idiot stuff like that. You knew Mexico wasn't paying for anything. Trump knew it. Only the Trumpanzees didn't know it.

And when not only did Mexico not pay for it, but the wall never got built, the Trumpanzees didn't care. They're certain he'll build it this time.

Trump always puts extra on something that doesn't need the extra.

Yeah. Republicans are fricked. One guy said Mexico will pay for a wall, several years ago.. and another guy is wearing high heels and is famous for having a slap fight with Disney.

Because he knew the cock-sucking Congress wouldn't pay for it.

You pay for it by taxing remittances. That’s how Mexico pays for it. Only a smooth brain Ron bot would think it meant the Mexican government would cut a check.

You will call me out for making excuses for Trump but making the claim that Mexico will pay for the wall is aspirational (like all campaign promises from every candidate) and it sets the trade negotiation framework before sitting at the table with Mexico.

Make Mexico pay for the wall is the goal. Congress would have had to agree to make it happen. Paul Ryan was not a Trump fan so he put up as many roadblocks as he could. Trump did not get the legislation he needed to make Mexico pay for the wall. A 4% remittance tax could have accomplished that but congress did not act.

Yep go to any western union on payday in south LA and they are lined up wiring money back home. Pretty easy to see how a 5-10% tax would add up to huge money quick

I did some back of the napkin calcs in 2015 when this was debated and IIRC on a 10 year plan a 4% remittance tax would bring in about $7.5 billion in 2015 dollars.

Exactly. He never meant that Mexico was going to cut a check. It was thru tax remittances and increasing trade surplus.

I wish the search function was worth a damn here as plenty of Trumpfans fully expected Mexico to pay for it and they weren't talking about remittances.
