We put up with explosive diarrhea because we want cheap lettuce

We put up with 99% of hispanics driving around with no license and insurance because we want cheap labor.
Everyone can yell and puff up all they want but the truth is the American consumer (and you too), wants cheap so that more can be consumed.
Downvotes are clicks too. But, are you honestly willing to pay higher prices for American labor for your lettuce?

You’re not wrong. But it’s a little more complicated than that.

That's gonna be a financially painful recall.

Fruit and vegetable producer Taylor Fresh Foods says it is voluntarily removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market amid an ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak across the country that has sickened more than 1,600 people.

Yes- it’s just lettuce. Get rid of lettuce, and the problems disappear. Everyone will be able to afford everything again. Genius! #GETRIDOFLETTUCE

we should be eating watercress not lettuce. lettuce has no nutritional value and no flavor.
Watercress is the opposite....
Watercress is a superfood.

This is why it is a bit more complicated than "we've gutted our food safety regulatory system" though that is mostly true in a vacuum. I'm not sure how US standards and labor practices save us from explosive diarrhea when the work is happening outside our jurisdiction then imported.

Anyone who eats at Taco Bell is asking for it to begin with. Ditch the fast food, people. It's gross.

I switched to seaweed, me. It’s the lettuce of the seas.

Wash your produce after you wash your hands.
I wash the produce that comes out of my garden and the fruit that I harvest off my trees.

Pretty sure none of us were included in the decision to let them in

They said that washing the lettuce didn't stop what was making people sick.

Yes.
But I know catfish processors that offered higher wages and benefits to American citizens to attract more workers because of labor shortage and gave the higher wages to current employees to keep them. It actually made some quit because the higher income made them lose too many welfare benefits and there was a decrease in new applicants for the same reason. You’d have to pay 60-70k a year to be worth more than a 10 dollar an hour job plus welfare benefits, and that’s not economically feasible.
So you see the problem. We have the available people for those jobs and they’ll do those jobs but they need to go hungry first. If we dont drastically reduce welfare then we can’t feasibly eliminate immigrant workers without economic and inflationary disaster

From what I understand, it's iceberg lettuce. It is not nutrient dense. Always get Romaine lettuce. It's 10 X better for you. It's very nutrient dense. The greener, the better for you. Also, the more color in your veggies, the better.

Wrong. Bagged lettuce is more expensive than a head of lettuce. But more people by bagged lettuce. So people want more expensive lettuce.
